I Think Woodward and Bernstein Inadvertently Destroyed the Press in the USA.

It wasn't through amazing and heroic measures that they were able to expose the Watergate crimes and cover up. They just happened to be the ones that picked up the phone at the time. Be that as it may, they had the story of the decade dropped in their laps but did have the chops to get off their butts and run with it. But what was the long term consequences of bringing down a US President? It set the stage for almost every journalist that came after them. It was no longer about reporting the news. Journalism became all about "making a difference", and bringing someone down. "All the News Fit to Print" was ripped down as the standard, giving way to "By Any Means Necessary". Now we no longer have journalism. Events aren't documented as they happened anymore. Now it's all about pushing an agenda, covering for the politicians they support while attempting to bury anyone who they oppose. I call it "The Incompetent Press", because there is nothing professional or ethical about them. They know we know they're lying through their bigoted teeth, but they also don't care. For my own experience (which is admittedly limited). I have been interviewed by reporters from the AP to local news and college news papers. With only one notable exception, my quotes were taken out of context or misquoted completely. I spent a lot of the 90s working one emergency or another. We used to listen to or watch the coverage and wonder what situation they were talking about. Yes, I doubt there is a single honest person in any position of authority in the US Press.

The rush to be the first person to air the "news" often ends in the story not really being correct but being correct isn't as important as being the first, well at least to the media.
