The Kneeling Nun

It stands 500 feet above the once town of Santa Rita, New Mexico east of Silver City in Grant County. From a distance, you can see The monolith shaped like a nun. She kneels before the dome of the mountain, praying for forgiveness.
What did she do and why was she there?
Monks and nuns built a monastery and they cared for injured of Coronado's men as they looked for gold and were hurt in Indian attacks. One sister Rita fell in love with one of the men.
She was condemned to death and prayed to be turned into stone instead. God granted her wish and she kneels there forever begging for forgiveness of her sins.
There is a song by L.E. King about her tribulations. The last line is, “Oh Madre de Dios! Thy mercy on such as I!”
The Kneeling Nun is a favorite landmark in southwest New Mexico and reminds people everywhere not to sin as she had done.

What a beautiful legend of a remorseful nun. She wanted to tell anyone that committing a sin, one should be remorseful as she acknowledged her sin and be sincere (kneeling) to ask for forgiveness.
