I Went to See the Salinas River Tonight

I'm trying to get back to walking regularly again, so I went for a photo walk by the river in the late afternoon. Something about the light coming in my office window in the two hours before the sunset drives me crazy. That's when I most want to get out of the house.
I had only planned to take a brisk walk on the outer path along the river by the edge of the park, but as usual, I changed my plans. I started taking pictures of the trees, wildflowers, even weeds. But that's for another post.
I hadn't been planning to go all the way down to the river, off the paths, but I did it anyway. I didn't see anyone around and took the chance, since I didn't see any homeless people camped in the park. I guess it's legal now, but I didn't see anyone. I did have to be careful where I stepped, though. People usually clean up after their dogs, but some people don't clean up after themselves. I was also careful to watch out for needles, though so far I've never seen them in this part of the park. People have reported seeing them near the overpasses farther north in this park.
But I did go and photograph the river. It was just the right time of day to shoot it. I hope you enjoy this shot. I thought the river might have disappeared by now, but the rains this week kept it going a bit longer.

@bagarad - That is a great shot. Whenever I think of the Salinas River, it brings to mind the book, "Of Mice and Men." It must be a wonderful place to walk!

@bagarad - As a country, we need to get this homeless problem under control. I don't know if we need to go back to the work farms of the 1930s (like in "Of Mice and Men"), some type of dorms, or something else, but something needs to be done.
I volunteer at a homeless shelter, and it has been very eye opening. It shocks me how many people in their 60s and 70s are homeless, how many of the homeless are obviously mentally ill, mentally retarded or physically handicapped, and even how many of the homeless are working at low paying jobs, such as bus boys at Laguna restaurants, and cannot afford a place to live. There are so many different problems, but we need to come up with some kind of solution, because it is getting worse, and these people are often vulnerable and completely clueless about what they can do to change their situation.
I agree that the current situation, of mentally ill people camping anywhere they want, is not working.

@bagarad - I think those are all good ideas. San Clemente just moved a dozen or so homeless campers from the beach to a maintenance yard, where they can camp legally, out of sight of beachgoers. They put porta-potties there and gave them access to a tap for clean running water. They also will send social workers in periodically to offer other help. I think that is a good solution. They are away from the beach, they will not be harassed, they will have access to a bathroom and fresh water. I don't think we need to put them in the Ramada Inn, but making sure they have a safe place to camp is a good compromise.

The photo is well taken ! You had better have someone as company walking at the time of the day. What needles do you have to watch out for ?

what a great picture -
I wonder what it is about the late in the day sunlight, perhaps the angle of the sunlight?

The river bank looks quiet and sedate there.
