Some Myths About Low Carb Eating

Sometimes when I tell people I do a low carb diet/way of eating people get worried. There are some myths about low carb that people think are true, but in fact are not. One of those are that carbs are essential/needed to live. False. Glucose is essential, but you don't need to eat carbs to get the glucose the body needs. The body will make it from protein. Another is that low carb equals nutrient deficiencies. But low carb foods are full of nutrients. You eat meats, and can still eat a lot of the non-starchy veggies. Also, can supplement for some nutrients if needed. Some will say that low carb is dangerous. They may say that it will cause keto-acidosis. No, low carb causes ketosis which is completely different. Keto-acidosis normally happens in type one diabetics when their sugars are too high. Another one is that it will cause heart disease. In research that I have done (reading a lot about it online) modern research shows that the statement is not true....and all the research in the past never exactly proved that it was true. A lot will say that low carb high fat is a fad. False....it is a diet very similar to what our ancestors ate. There are people jumping on the bandwagon and making a bunch of low carb/Keto products because it is becoming more popular but it has been around a long time. I know there are more out there, but these are just some I found when researching the other day. Do you think of any of these when you hear "low carb"? How about others I didn't mention?

See I get the same crap when I say I am going all the way back vegan, people think you cannot live without meat, cheese and dairy. Vegetables have protein too. I first got started as a vegetarian because I had high cholesterol and my doctor put me on it, within a month I had lost 16 pounds, and when the 6 months check up came the cholesterol was okay. I ate this way for 3 years, except Christmas and I would have turkey and dressing. but the best part was my blood sugar was normal, I took no medication! While vegetables are carbs they are complex carbs and not simple carbs. Simple carbs are bread, all flour products, rice and all sugars.Cake and candy, etc. Why did I stop eating a vegetarian diet? Traveling! No place served animal free meals.

I think we all have to eat the way that works best for us...whether that is low carb/carnivore, vegan, or in moderation.....but people will always think another way is better! That's great that after being put on that way of eating you lost weight and got your cholesterol under control, and blood sugar. That is true, and those are the carbs allowed on a low carb way of eating; the complex carbs from veggies (except root veggies). That's understandable why you stopped....it is hard when no place offers vegan options.

Dr. Atkins had hundreds of patients, who followed a low-carb diet for their entire lifetime. Their weigh problem vanished, BP and cholesterol reading went back to a healthy level, with more energy than they'd ever had before. Plus, their blood tests were coming back perfectly normal! Dr. Atkins followed the exact same diet and he maintained a healthy weight for many years!

@MommyOfEli2013 I require a little more carbohydrate, in my diet or I lose energy. If I get too much, my glucose readings start to go up.

@kobesbuddy If I eat too many carbs I lose energy....I do better on extremely low carbs. Glad you know that you need to find that balance!

Yes, I have heard of his low carb diet and how it helped so many people. That's great he followed his own recommendation. I do a similar diet, but have more fat than is on that diet.

I found that my health is much better since I changed my diet to lots of fruits and vegetable fruits like tomatoes and cucumbers and tender green lettuces. This has worked for me but each person needs to find what works best for them.

@MommyOfEli2013 I agree! I have read many life stories of people that have lived over 100 and everyone has a different diet.

Well that is great that you feel better changing to that kind of diet...I definitely agree that each person needs to find what works for them. I think low carb is a great diet, but I am not going to say that everyone in the world NEEDS to eat that way lol...

@1hopefulman That is true, not just one diet is correct...think it depends on the person. Some do better eating just meats, or low carb....some do better eating vegan, etc...

When I think low carb, I think of no breads, pastas, cereals and things like that. I don't eat those anyway. However, when I see how much you eat, I wonder that you're not starving yourself because what you eat in a whole day would be half a meal for me or less.

@MommyOfEli2013 1200 isn't a lot of calories. It's at the bottom of the scale when you're looking at weight loss. I don't know how many calories I eat a day. I know I don't eat junk food, so it's not bad calories.

Yes....that exactly is my thoughts on low carb too. I do eat as low as 1,200 calories a day....but I am in weight loss mode and not working out currently. If I do work out regulary, I may go up to 1,500. Eating meats though I get a lot more full a lot faster than I would on carbs.

@just4him I know, it's the lowest one is said to eat....but it seems if I eat more I won't lose weight...I don't feel I am starving though. It's good if you don't have to count calories....sometimes I wish I didn't have to.

It is easier to stay on than I thought it would be too. If people would just try it they would see if can be healthy.

Yes....that is one that they say too -- that it is something that can't be sustainable for very long. But that is right....if they just gave it a try they'd see.

You have done some extensive good research about it. Apart from glucose there are other forms of sugar like fructose, sucrose, lactose which are available in fruits and milk. If you have to have some sugar,I think these are better.

Yes, I had to so I knew that this way of eating was not dangerous. Yes, I hear those are better....but it is still sugar which will spike blood sugar and insulin....so I try not to have those. I will have some dairy though, but not milk.
