At akimbo

Sometimes my hands are at akimbo without me realizing it. To most or even all of my friends, my doing it doesn't cause them to be offended. At my new neighborhood, the shop owner opposite the house I am staying got mad at me standing in front of him with my right hand at akimbo. He said it was impolite as if I wanted to ask for a fight. I told him I was used to doing it without having any intention to ask for a fight. He didn't seem to understand me and continued showing his hate to me. Whats your take on this?

There are some words I have heard of before, but never knew what they meant because I never use them. That is one of them. To see your picture, I understand what akimbo is. It's not hateful to me. It's a pose that asks a question such as, What are you waiting for? Or Are you coming? I see nothing in that stance as a threat.

@hereandthere The word was never used in school for any reason, not even a spelling word. I've heard it a handful of times in my life but never knew what it meant.

The shopkeeper seemed to jump to conclusions from mere gesture. I think he has some inner fear that was bothering him.

I do not think that this gesture looks hostile, I cannot understand the attitude of the shop owner.

Nothing offense is made. It's a natural action of anyone if he's used to it. I don't know if it's a mannerism.

@yanzalong I am used to that action too when I was a kid. I was curiously watching my late father working, fixing a borken leg chair and I was standing in akimbo. He told me, are you a foreman?
