A quiet Monday at home (20th) and a week on a very low budget for me. On the Tuesday I called to the Doctors to pick up a repeat prescription for my blood pressure medications, and collected enough of the necessary drugs for the next few months. On the Wednesday I took part in a workshop with the university volunteers, helping outline notes for some possible training films we will be working on soon. The next few days involved job searching and preparing for a talk I was invited to give on Saturday. Saturday 25th May was the talk itself, relating to local pub signs, on what started off as a very nice warm day. The talk was in a very nice pub, The Stanley Arms, pub and a meal was provided for me. There were only six in the audience and though they were lovely, sadly no one bought copies of my book afterwards. When I left the pub, the weather had disintegrated and it was raining. On the Sunday (26th May) I went to the train station to collect my tickets for a trip to Derby in later June (cheaper if ordered and paid for week in advance). I later phoned my mum to let her know that I am visiting her in a few weeks in Manchester. Arthur Chappell

Interesting that you pay less if you buy train tickets in advance. I have to check it it's the same here. I am sure you mum will be happy to see you.

@LadyDuck the ticket ordering systems here are complex - lot of people making the same journey can end up paying wildy different fares - it is stupid

I go to Derbyshire quite regularly but I think only once to Derby itself. I go to Buxton and the Peak District area, plus Chatsworth Country Fair,

@arthurchappell Me too. I go there quite often. There's a nice bookshop not far south of it, although in my opinion it's gone downhill a bit recently, as a third of it is now cafe.

I'm sorry that no one bought your book. It's nice you are going to visit your Mom. She will enjoy the visit.

It's too bad about the low turnout at the talk but the bright side is that things can only go up from there.

Yes, as Yazz sang, the only way is up (apart from down, sideways, forward, back, left and right of course)

Merchandising at talks is never predictable. There may well be other occasions where a decent percentage of your audience will buy books. I hope you also get booked by some writers' groups and can do a talk about how you put the book together.
