An insult that's actually a compliment? (and the other way round)

Has anyone ever attempted to insult you, and it's actually a compliment? I know there are plenty of times the opposite way around too, someone intends a compliment but it's actually mistaken for something rude. Or someone has threatened you with something that you actually want? Here's my examples : 1) Someone called me fat (true I'm heavy) and I just shrugged and said thanks. 2) One woman who was trying to be very kind but said something like since I'm a nice person I should have a boyfriend - in spite of my appearance. I truly believe that she didn't mean that as bad as it sounded. and of course we couldn't do this post without my old man 3) I really dislike washing cars. The old man loves it. When I told him that I wouldn't do it more than once a week - "Fine! he insists angrily. I won't give you the opportunity to wash my car any more." Uhm. alright then. Fine with me. Photo: Pixabay

These are definitely not compliments, but the words of very not competent people.

Yes, I have had rude comments meant as “compliments”. Those people are no longer a part of my life. And glad to hear you no longer have to wash your father’s car!

I've had compliments backfire on me. People have also had to back peddle when they said something to me and realized how offensive it was. I know I've done it too. I try very hard not to be rude or to say things that can't be taken wrong. However, when you have a tendency to talk backward, it can happen more than I like.

The first two are very rude. Even if the second one was meant to be a compliment. Sorry you had to hear those.

@Courtlynn Me too. There is a whole body positive movement out there - it's widely misunderstood as "promoting obesity" - in fact it's about loving yourself as you are, you may still make changes to your body but coming from a place of love and not of being conditioned to view yourself as "less than" because of not looking like the (airbrushed) models that are everywhere

Thanks. I try to shrug it off usually. I'm big and know it... of course everyone deserves basic politeness no matter how big (or small) - and I think society is getting better about that. Thanks dear. More people should be as kind as you.

When anyone calls me a *itch I say thank you, since that was my intention it is no insult to me!! lol I'm the first to say if Salem had *itch trials instead of witch trials I would have been in grave danger!!

Many times last week. One night, we are going home riding in our scooter when a Police make us stop. I was tired from my treatment. So the boyfriend told the Police officer where we came from. The Police said okay, you may go. Your daughter needs a rest. And I was like? What? She called me your daughter? The boyfriend just laughed and said, he thought you are a kid. You gets small. I don’t know until now if it’s a compliment or not.

I am meeting with not so bright people recently and if they try to insult they make it pretty imperative.

Sometimes I think people open their mouths before the brain catches up!! How rude were they but you handled their comments gracefully.
