1953 - Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay become the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
1903 - Bob Hope (Leslie Townes Hope) was born in London, England. He was an English-American actor, singer, stand-up comedian, vaudevillian, dancer, athlete and author. His career spanned nearly 80 years; and he appeared in more than 70 films. He grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a boxer in the 1910s. He hosted the Academy Awards 19 times, wrote 14 books and made 57 tours for the USO between 1941-1991. He retired in 1997 and died in 2003 at the age of 100. Bob is shown in the picture above (on the far left).
His signature song was "Thanks for the Memory" which he sings in this clip:

I adored Bob Hope he was a comfort to many overseas and was just so funny all the time.
