State. 1953 - Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay become the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest. 1903 - Bob Hope (Leslie Townes Hope) was born in London, England. He was an English-American actor, singer, stand-up comedian, vaudevillian, dancer, athlete and author. His career spanned nearly 80 years; and he appeared in more than 70 films. He grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a boxer in the 1910s. He hosted the Academy Awards 19 times, wrote 14 books and made 57 tours for the USO between 1941-1991. He retired in 1997 and died in 2003 at the age of 100. Bob is shown in the picture above (on the far left).
