When your Mom has gout and diabetes

It's been over a week since my mom was moved to our house to recover after a terrible gout attack. She spent 5 days in the hospital for treatment and therapy. Her knees and ankles were swollen and as large as a big fist.
When she came here she was still able to get up and walk for a few days. Unfortunately gout is an evil thing -- despite medication and strict diet, her bones and muscles just suddenly became too weak and painful and she's disabled again.
I feel so sorry for my mom who used to be so strong and fit as horse. She is also battling borderline diabetes so I try my best to monitor her diet.
Do you know anyone battling both gout and diabetes?

I feel so sorry for people who suffer from this illness. It must be very frustrating to not be able to walk.

@almostoveryou exactly. Is gout always associated with diabetes?

@Janet357 I really don't know. My best friend has both too. What's scary is both illness can lead to kidney problems.

My mother had that plus a big kidney problem. But the gout was kept on hand with pills and diet. She could not eat red meat which was her favorite.

Is gout related to kidney problems? My mom is currently on vegetarian diet. I cook all her meals to make sure she doesn't get artificial seasoning and other preservatives.

@almostoveryou I don´t think so. Gout is due to an excess in uric acid. But I don´t know much. Her diet was with no red meat but she could eat chicken and fish.

maybe putting hot or cold compresses on her knees and ankles would help?

We've tried only hot compress so far. I was advised to do both hot and cold too. Thanks. I'll ask the caregiver to help me do it today. For now Mama gets by with warm detox patches from Korea.

@almostoveryou It is correct, anti inflammatory helps when it hurts, for the rest is a matter of correct diet and drink plenty of liquids.

As to how I understand it, there's no definite cure for gout. You will always be prone to swelling once you've reached a certain level of uric acid in your body. But it can be managed through diet, exercise and medication.

No, I haven't. I will put your mom in my prayers. I hope you can make her as comfortable as possible.

Thank you so much, Rasma. I really appreciate it. I'm trying to make her feel comfortable. She's fine when she doesn't move but in agony when she tries to move her knees and legs.
