D-Day

Being today is the anniversary of D-Day I thought I should say something about it. The day that started the turn of WWII. The operation included British, Canadian and American troops making an assault from the English Channel, over 160,000 troops crossed the channel that day. They said that by the end of the operation, at the end of August over 2 million troops crossed the channel and of that there was 226,386 casualties. Can you imagine being one of those troops crossing on D-Day? As a combat veteran I can not even imagine that. The bullets flying, trying to cross the open sand, the water it is all to much to try and imagine what it was like. These troops average age was 20 years old. I guess that is one of the reasons we call them the Greatest Generation, sadly we are losing all those that survived that.

A couple years back I had the chance to meet with one, me and 5 other prior service members and he was telling about it and the only time I seen 6 grown men cry like babies listening to his story.

I think Saving Private Ryan does a pretty good depiction of what was happening on D Day. The opening series, was very lifelike, according to those who were there.

Yes, we don't have many veterans of WW11 left. They had a horrible job to do and they did it. Some of them just kids 18 and 19 years old. I hope the younger generation are studying it in school and never let it be forgotten.

We need to pass that information down. Hopefully people will pass it along to their kids.

@Bensen32 I'm concerned that many kids don't know about the Holocaust. These things need to be taught in school.

@RubyHawk maybe the thought is...if we don't talk about it then it didn't happen? I have no idea why they don't teach these things anymore.
