Animals and humans: pets or friends.

I had a dog friend that has now gone to where good dogs go after they die. I never considered her a pet. And, best of all, she never considered that I was her master. The relationship was of equality and when she died of old age, I mourned her as I would any loved one.
I have asked myself many times what sort of relationship makes a fried and hat doesn´t. And that runs for animals but also for human beings.
I would not call a serpent in a cage a friend. But a dog, some dogs, my dogs, are friends. And many times good friends in need.
What are your experiences?

@marguicha No my neighbors have not at all intention to move, especially now that their children have grown up and they are going to work in the north of Switzerland. The owner of Bubi the cat is the Director of our local Custom Police, his office is very close and he loves to live here. He and his wife are in their mid 40s, he still has 20 years to work before he can retire. Poor Bubi will not live 20 years.

I had a friend who cared for every dog she saw. And the dogs sensed it.

My dog is part of the family, I would never have something I didn't care about, so yes, all animals in my house get royal treatment.

@CookieMonster46 No. The dog in the picture is not my dog. My dog is a German shepherd.

I suppose that it depends on the animal we have.

@marguicha True. Some people have it just because of kids or social status.

I felt the same for Topaz who stayed for 17 long years. We still miss him like a loved member of our family.

@marguicha 16 years is quite old for any breed of dog. Good that she lived a long life.

@marguicha Some times I'm one of them, some times I'm something a bit different is the impression I get.

I consider Lily (my cat) my friend. She's my little protector at times.

Well, at some point I thought my dog had a mind of its own like us. In fact we treat her as another naughty brat in the family and not an animal.

@marguicha well, Samantha, my dog will behave if shouted at. Unlike my nephew. Nevertheless both could be a headache, and we love them!

I know a few people who treat their pets just like their kids.
