Along with favorite songs that have “radio” in the title I’m celebrating songs about radio, in some way or another. For today’s song about radio I’m picking another favorite, so this is one of those no-surprise days. Blame it on how sore my feet are from walking the course all day.
Here’s the no-shock song for today.
#5: FM (No Static At All) - Steely Dan
Yeah, that’s what I thought. I’m sure a lot of people had this one pegged to be on the countdown, too.
What can I say? Messers Becker and Fagen took a shot at the rapidly deteriorating FM rock format in favor of “top 40 FM rock.” It’s almost comical to look at the “classic rock” lineup on the soundtrack to the film FM (for which this was the title song) then think about the notion of one radio station being “better” than another with a “different format.” Ha.
And The Dan pointed it out, too, lamenting the partygoers drunk on grapefruit wine “don’t seem to care” that the radio is playing “nothing but blues and Elvis and somebody else’s favorite song.”
How dated. You can’t even get blues, Elvis, or a request played on a modern FM station. They want “no static at all” from their listeners.
FM (No Static At All)
Written by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen
Recorded by Steely Dan
From FM (Motion Picture Soundtrack), 1978

I have that sound track album on vinyl from when it was originally released. I used to have the "Paper Airplane" poster that came with it on my wall. For that matter, I have had the album cover on my wall too.
The Album is a great compilation. Besidea, you get to hear Waddy Wachtel playing for Linda Ronstadt.
As for this song, it features one of the classic song intros.

@FourWalls Always fun (but rare) to tin into people who know of him. He's played with almost everyone from the California music scene.

@ParaTed2k — he’s in a band of those great and ubiquitous session musicians called “Immediate Family,” with Russ Kunkel, Danny Kortchmar, and Leland Sklar.

I actually can get my Elvis and Johnny Rivers! Kentucky Rain and Memphis Tennessee are personal favorites. There is an AM radio station which plays them and some old 50's tunes too. Now back to Steely Dan.. Great song yep no static at all on that one
WKRP in Cincinnati would definitely approve!
