Scotland's national flower

The thistle is Scotland's national flower. This prickly customer was chosen as our national flower several centuries ago when, according to legend, an invading force of Viking warriors were attempting to sneak up at night upon a Scottish army's encampment but the invaders had the misfortune to step on a patch of thistles. Their resulting cries of pain revealed their presence and the Scots arose and defeated their enemies.
Looking at the thorns on a thistle (and having been pricked by a couple myself) I can well understand how the Vikings felt about stepping on some - no wonder they cried out in pain!

It's beautiful. My desert has a similar thorny flower but it's yellow not purple.

That's deserving to be considered as your national flower. Mine is Sampaguita. It's Internationally known as Jasminus Sambac. It symbolizes purity, simplicity, humility and strength.
