My kids are writing penpal letters this summer. They did so last summer but nobody wrote them back so I’m hoping this summer with new kids that they will write to each other and practices there writing skills. It’s part of there summer activities. I think I’ll get some Ohio post cards for them to send to there penpal when we go on vacation.

That is too bad they got no return letters. This is so rewarding for kids to do.

When I was at school, there was a big drive to get kids writing penpal letters. I wrote to a few. I got a few back. Some lasted just one or two letters. I wrote to one for a few years then didn't hear from her for a while after she got married. Recently, though, she found me on Facebook. My most successful one, though, was with a boy from Tunisia. He is now a man, of course. We have kept in touch for 14 years. Although we have never met, I consider him like a brother. He always refers to my children as his nephews. I know I was very lucky to have found such a friend. Over the years, there have been times when I didn't have much to say. I'd share news with him or tell him what I'd done over the summer (which wasn't usually a lot!). We'd send each other pictures. Now, we are still in touch but don't write actual letters so often.
