A Story About Brother

I used to write these mountain stories on Triond and Bubblews. So don't think I've lost my mind. I'm dedicating it especially to Crazy-Horse-lady. I think I've already told y'all a lot about my sisters and brother. But friends, y'all don't know the half of it. Now brother is a good ole boy from way back and you would just want to hug his neck if you ever met him. He loves talkin to folks, he don't care if they are young or old, he just likes to talk. And Honey, he will listen and that's why brother's so smart. He will listen to every word you say and remember it. There ain't no grass growing on brother. He's smart as a fox. And you know you ain't gonna catch no fox. Not unless you got a good blue tick hound, you ain't. Now brother used to know all the boot leggers on the mountain and honey he would take us sisters and show us where they were, even if we didn't want to go, cause you know them stills was hid way up in the hollers and them bootleggers had shotguns up there just watching for folks snooping around. But you can't argue with brother, when he said go, we hopped. But, honey we was lucky, we never did get caught, and we could have led the law right to them stills, but we wouldn't do nothin like that. And if we had brother woulda skinned us alive and we knowed it

Just loved your story and it reminded me of a true story. When my late husband was little and growing up in Latvia his grandpa made what is there known as moonshine or homemade liquor to which I always referred to as homemade poison. Anyway, I love his story. Grandpa is out there in the woods stoking up the fire and boiling up the stuff. My hubby and his older brother by about a year and a half or so head on over to see what Gramps is doing. Now Gramps is an ornery old Latvian guy who lives and swears by his moonshine. He gives a sip to the boys and then tells my hubby his youngest grandson to go home and have grandma give him some jugs to pour the stuff. He heads for home but starts feeling strange by the time grandma saw him she had to pour him into bed. I mean how much does a boy of about 7 or 8 need? Well, that surely caused a great big hullabaloo.

That sounds very much like our ancestors who lived in the mountains back in the day. Actually our brother did find a moonshine still and took us to see it. Most of my mountain stories have a little truth in them. My granddaddy was a big drinker of moonshine.

Glad you liked it. That was back in the day. You wouldn't find moonshine stills now. Probably are still some but they'ed be well hidden.

That was just for fun but there's some truth in it. I write funny stories about mountain people. I feel I can get away with it because I'm one of them.

@RubyHawk I’m willing to bet a few stills are still around. But they are probably few and far between. I know a lot of states have passed laws recently that allow people to operate stills on small scale, so that they can make their own liquor for personal consumption. I have a buddy who makes moonshine and brings to our football tailgates every season. That stuff will knock you on your a$$!

@moffittjc I've heard of small distillery's around our area but nothing like they used to be. I suppose the whiskey is still just as strong. I remember my granddad used to mix me up a bit of toddy. A few drops of whiskey, a spoon of sugar and a glass of water.I liked it. Later on I made it for myself but much stronger.
