Halfway through the countdown of the classic shows that I actually did watch (as opposed to the previous countdown, showing some of the popular shows that I never watched an episode of), and I have to correct something I said in a previous series...simply because I didn't want to give this show away. Here's today's classic show. #6: The Rockford Files What I said was, in discussing Moonlighting, that there hadn't been a mixture of comedy and mystery (emphasis on comedy) since Burke's Law. Well, this was also a genius mixture of humor and drama....again, emphasis on comedy. Actually, this isn't that much of a surprise. When I counted down my favorite TV characters Jim Rockford was on the list. This show was worth watching for the opening alone! Every week there was a message on Rockford's answering machine (this is the 70s, remember!) that was hilarious. Oh, and the theme song!!!! Mike Post's theme song made the Billboard top ten in 1975. I appreciated the fact that Jim Rockford (played superbly by Emmy winner James Garner) was more "blue collar" successful than the "down-on-his-luck" gumshoe who'd get the case solved but never any reward. (I got my fill of that in Randall & Hopkirk [Deceased], thank you.) A terrific series from start to finish, and one I'm eventually going to have on DVD. The Rockford Files Aired on NBC 1974-1980 The opening credits (with the ever-changing message on his answering machine), featuring that terrific theme song:

Jim Rockford in his 1974 Firebird
I enjoyed this show both for the fine acting by James Garner and for his car. I loved those mid-19 70s Firebirds.
