A man arrives in Sligo, Ireland in the summer of 2009. He registers with the hotel under an alias, and pays in cash. No identification is asked for. He's seen on CCTV throughout the town, but his movements make the police wonder if he is aware of where the CCTV's are and is able to avoid most of them.
He's seen leaving his hotel carrying a purple bag but not returning with said bag. The bag is plastic and it's presumed it holds personal affects. This occurs around 13 times. He buys international stamps at the post office but no CCTV records him posting letters and no stamps or letters are found with his affects.
The night before his death he is seen at the seashore pacing back and forth. His movements are not described as agitated, but rather purposeful. He's a man who is walking in a deliberate manner.
He's not wearing appropriate attire for swimming, and he did not drown. It's reported later that he had a heart attack but that his health was rapidly declining in such a manner that he had to be aware of his condition. It's said that he probably wouldn't have lived much more than a few weeks longer.
He's buried in an unmarked grave. No family has ever come forward.
My thoughts :
I can't account for the strange behavior with the purple bag, but I do think that he ended up posting letters back home. He may have been saying his final farewells to family. I think that he knew of his condition and wanted to have control of his own fate. I believe his intention was to swim until his body could no longer handle it and then allow the sea to take him.
I'm sharing two links, only one of which will be hyperlinked. I still think you should check the second one out.

I think I heard about this case at the time. It reminds me a bit of Edgar Allan Poe to be honest, except Poe was delerious the last he was seen.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes, he may have wanted to drown himself..but just the fear and anxiety of thinking of it, gave him a heart attack. Drowning isn't a pleasant way to go.

He could have been involved in some bad stuff, but I think it was more likely that he was just wanting to be left alone in his final days. That purple bag though, that has me wondering.

This is a strange one but, to be fair, it doesn't take much to get the Guards wondering as they aren't the sharpest knives in the draw

The article I posted (The Irish Times one) says that there was some "technical problems" with the post offices CCTV, that they had taken a blank USB drive of the footage back to the station with them. I'm thinking that it's possible someone there intentionally messed with the footage, but I dunno.
As for the guards, I guess they are as smart as any other force.@ScribbledAdNauseum (104615)

@Mike197602 We have a few such police forces over here like that. Once lived in a county where the state trooper would pull people over just to have a chat about the weather. Wouldn't write them up or anything.
