Promoting my music on MyLot

I had a long discussion with a band-mate and friend today. We discussed promoting our music on the internet. What makes some songs successful and others not so successful? And what makes some musicians more successful than others?
Obviously, if you're a 16-year-old girl covering songs by Ed Sheeran, the fella that co-wrote "Love Yourself" with Justin Bieber, you're going to get hundreds of thousands of views. Pretty faces sell, even if you've played guitar for only two years.
But what if you're just a middle-aged guy (like me) who happens to be a good musician? Why are my YouTube videos getting more views than those of my buddy, Mike Stenberg (you can YouTube him--he's been playing "out" for much longer than I have), but less than many less talented musicians?
Mike and I have a gig tonight. We'll be backing our buddy, Mark, who is a an actor turned Country singer. He has a few songs on YouTube, but is not a "sensation." Vanny, DJ, and I have a new YouTube video featuring "The Horse" almost ready to go.
Will it do well? Who knows? I want to wait until our (previous) latest hits 775 views. But we just may go ahead and put it out there.
Do you have thoughts about what works and what does not work? Oh, here's my latest. Can you help me get to over 800 views so I can feel good about posting yet another video?
“Hello in There” A song by John Prine Colin H. Sacks - Vocal and Guitars Sound Engineer - Michael Stenberg

The link has not come through yet. But yes I will help. I have never tried to get followers on YouTube. But I would think that is the key. I wish I had the secret to tell you but keep posting and keep picking and grinning.
You will get there.

@CarolDM I'm glad you made it to the post. Become a subscriber and...nothing much will happen. You might get a Notification when Vanny, DJ and I post something new. But I'll get to do a happy dance and say, "I have 76 subscribers, not 75!" Or whatever.

I listened to some of it. You have a very soothing voice. I cannot tell you why you get more hits on your video youtubes rather than giving them to your friend. I do not know him but you have a very soothing voice that is easy to listen to. I did not listen to all of it but what do Archie and Edith have to do? So that was a personal song I take it?

Do you use sites like myspace, it was free last time I was there, pinterest is free and I get a lot of views from shared posts, not just my own, because all ages go there. How do you have it listed? can you add indie along with whatever you say you are? aka blues/country/ easy listening. Tweet news about where you are playing and add a song. Flipboard? Tumblr?
You want to be seen you have to work for it.

Lemme tell you something you already know, so I’m probably just saying this for the benefit of others who think every singer is stinking rich.
I knew a guy who worked for Warner Brothers Records (he gave me a free ticket to see U2, the BoDeans, and Los Lobos in 1987, so he’s okay in my books). Here’s how he explained the music biz to me:
Of all the people who are making music, 99% of them never get heard by “anyone” with any pull (e.g., record people, promoter, etc.). Of the 1% who do get heard, 99% of them never get a second listen.
Of the 1% of those who get a record label interested, 99% of them never sign. Of the ones who do, 99% of them never make a second album.
So loo at it this way, U2 is in the minority and YOU are in the majority!!!! Enjoy!!!

Sure will give it a try. Do you remember me hosting you on my music blog? Would you like to be on my music blog again? I usually post all kinds of music and 8 videos at a time. Then I post it to the social networks and the music groups I am in on MeWe.

@TheHorse I can put any videos I want on my blog as long as they're through YouTube and once I post as I said I promote through all the social sites. Let's see who gets attracted and why not? Sending you a PM to give you my email and information.

Of course I would like to be on your music blog! But are my tunes worthy? Vanny, DJ, and I keep cranking them out, almost killing each other, and declaring each other mortal enemies for life. But that's just typical of the music world.

@TheHorse yes, I'm afraid they might be suspicious.. I went there and left a comment and saw it came up with my better halfs name on the comment. The song is beautiful but so sad I could have cried. I would love to hear some of your more cheerful music.

I just listened to the song again as I had listened to it some time ago but it only read 760 views which is lower than you stated. Very strange!
