Memo to self: you’re retired now, so don’t make any more doctor’s appointments early in the morning!! I feel all discombobulated from getting up too early after staying up too late. Sheesh, you’d think I was 17 again! Speaking of 17, here’s the next song on my list of favorites with “summer” in the title...that came out when I was 17!
#8: You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night) - Meat Loaf
One good thing about not listening to the radio anymore is that I’m getting the break from this album that I think everybody needed after 3-4 years of nonstop playing. Did you know Meat Loaf even made another album? He did, and some of his post-Bat Out of Hell music was pretty good. But those clods at FM Corporate Rock World don’t think you could tolerate something other than “Two out of Three Dashboard Lights” or whatever.
Now, I’ll admit that Jim Steinman’s songs can wear thin, due to that “formula” he uses when he writes. (A friend of mine once said Meat Loaf’s songs were annoying because “every verse sounded like a bridge, and the bridge sounded like a verse.” Point taken.) Plus, it has been over 40 years since this album came out.
But when it was unleashed on the world, wow. I can’t listen to it “all the way through” anymore, but there are still a couple of songs that I love to put on and crank up when I’m done playing folkies singing summer songs.
This is one of them. One of the “love found” songs (as opposed to “love lost”) has a different feel than the hard driving of the title song or “All Revved Up With No Place to Go” (another volume-cranker for me) or the pretty ballad of “Heaven Can Wait” (yes, it is a pretty ballad, something you would never associate with Meat Loaf!). It’s always been one of my favorite songs on the album.

How I love that song and the wolf with the red roses. It even inspired me to write a poem.
