It’s the longest day of the year!!! Summer has begun!! Break out the suntan lotion and the iced tea!!! And, in honor of the longest day of the year and our beloved myLotter Fredo (@amadeo ), here’s a bonus song on my countdown of songs with “summer” in the title.
BONUS: Summertime - Big Brother & the Holding Company
This song goes back to 1934 and Porgy & Bess. Picky Wedia says this has been recorded over 25,000 times. That’s a lot of mileage out of one little mournful tune. While jazz acts love it (Ella Fitzgerald owned this song with her version), it also makes a good blues song.
Enter Janis Joplin, who was born to sing the blues. And sing the blues, she did.
Just wish she hadn’t lived the blues, and subsequently died young from them.
Summertime
Written by George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin, and DuBose Heyward
Recorded by Big Brother & the Holding Company
From Cheap Thrills, 1968
