School uniforms, yea or nay?

In Japan, public school students from junior high on up, and private from the beginning, have school uniforms. Some of the international schools here do too. Ours has no uniforms but in elementary we have class T-shirts that are all the same color which kids wear on field trips. Each of my performing groups also has an outfit provided by the school and turned in at the end of the year.
Once every few years, the question comes up if we should have uniforms. A surprising number of high schoolers want to have them. They say it would help them look nice and save them the trouble of having to decide what to wear. Others are adamantly against it, saying it would squelch their creativity.
What do you think, for yourself or your kids?

@petatonicsca I really meant their non-uniform clothes might be designer labels.

Not here, the school uniforms for a school all come from the same company.

I think it's better to have uniforms, it can save your money on buying so much clothes. not limited to schools, it's better we can implement that in working environments as well.

That's an interesting thought. Most workers in companies here have some kind of uniforms or an expected look.

The high school that our son attended had a very strict uniform policy.
As parents, we could only purchase the uniform pieces from one company.
They were out of town, but you could order on-line and they would come to the school twice a year and set up shop and you could shop there. The uniforms were very expensive, and given how quickly teenagers grow, I found that they kept their value as there were always younger and smaller students who wanted to buy them.
Even their gym uniforms were special ones.

Come to thinkof it, my high school had required gym uniforms. Here in Japan uniforms are expensive too, but as you mentioned, they are good quality.

When I went to school we had no uniforms even in a private school and I liked it that way. I would hate wearing a uniform. However, all of the Catholic schools did have uniforms.
