Was he suffering from a mental illness, or was someone really out to get him?

It's the year 1984 and a man exclaims to his wife "Oh! I have it!" before furiously scribbling down six letters and immediately crossing them out. This wouldn't be the first time he exhibited weird behavior. He had mentioned "them" to his wife several times before, unknown people who were supposedly out to get him.
He went out to his favorite pub shortly after scribbling those six letters down on paper. Witnesses would claim that the man fell down, injuring his face and subsequently losing consciousness. The man was not drunk at the time of his fall.
He got into his car after regaining consciousness and his whereabouts were unknown for atleast two hours. Two truck drivers came across him in his car, which he had driven into a trench. The drivers saw a man near the car before they alerted authorities, but it is unclear whether that man was the injured man or someone entirely different.
When questioned, the man explained how there were four other persons in the car with him but they had ran away. He was adamant that these person were not his friends. He died en route to the hospital.

I don't know what to make of this, I tend to believe the man.

There's no telling what really happened. I read one of the other links that was provided and I am moving more towards the possibility that the man may have figured out who was after him. Some people believe that the letters he jotted down (one being a number) was actually a license plate tag. It could be that he recognized the tag number and figured out who was after him. He bolted out of the house soon thereafter and went to the pub. He might have had the intention of getting some liquid courage before confronting the person(s)

@ScribbledAdNauseum it is all so strange, I think maybe a license, or in code for some reason.

@CookieMonster46 Another theory is that the letters were meant to be read backwards. One article stated that his wife had torn up and thrown away his scribblings after he left, and so what she recalls may not necessarily be what he wrote. Especially considering he had scribbled through it, perhaps smudging or erasing part of what he wrote in the process.

@rakski Yes, I guess we will never know. I'm not sure that they would find anything new even if they looked over the forensics again.

I subscribe to that subreddit, but I didn't know this case. I just read it now. I wonder if there is a connection between the letters he wrote down and the things that happened afterwards. The letters would have been a part of a mental illness, but it could also have been something completely different. He could be mentally ill AND the victim of a crime.

Yes, it's very likely that he could have had a moment of clarity and that the letters signified something important. The wife had thrown away the original note and so what she recalled may not be accurate. She also said that he had recently been laid off of work, and that she attributed his behavior to being stress from that. It could be that whomever was out to get him (if that is real, and I believe someone really did kill him, whether it had to do with the note or not) was from his work.
He was German but it didn't say whether he knew any other languages. Perhaps the letter was an anagram or an abbreviation for something, but perhaps not necessarily something in the German language?
I guess we will never know.

@ScribbledAdNauseum The case is already very old, and we will probably never find out what actually happened. It must be very hard for his wife to live with that. This is the first case from Germany I have read or watched. Sometimes I watch YouTube videos about people who disappeared, but most of those cases take place in the U.S. There is also a podcast called Trace Evidence that I listen to sometimes.

@Porcospino I havent' listened to any podcasts but mainly because I've read that they are beginning to become very repetitive. I will sometimes frequent this subreddit, but not always. I actually found this via a search within the subreddit. I just searched via the unresolved and crime flairs.
I wonder if his wife has not already moved on. As you've said, it's been many years. She probably had very many difficult years, but I imagine she has moved passed it.

it may have been a very stressful problem for that man to handle.

I hadn't looked at any of the other links before I posted this., There was more information to be found on one of the links, which makes me think that it it's likely his old job could have also been involved. I'm not sure, and we will never know. The last hours of his life must have been extremely frightening for him.

@RubyHawk Yes, I imagine it would have been even more frightening for him if he was hallucinating. Especially if he came across people and tried to explain things to them that simply had never occurred.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I'm sure it was, even if he was a mental case.

I am not convinced of either. However, it's more likely that he was killed, whether as a result of the people supposedly following him or something else, I don't know.
The autopsy supposedly showed that he sustained injuries from being ran over, which suggests that he was later moved to his own vehicle and left to die. Especially as there is a man that was seen leaving the scene.

@ihasaquestion Highly unlikely as this case is around 34 years old.

@ScribbledAdNauseum If it's downright murder, then hope that the culprits will be brought to justice.

They will continue to happen, no matter how advanced forensics get.
