June 24 - Water Merry-making Festival

Today is the feast of St. John The Baptist, the patron saint of San Juan in Metro Manila, Philippines. It's their Basahan Festival.
Some parts of the country are also observing this. It is celebrated by people who douse a pail of water to the passersby. And others are having a splash on the sea water to different beaches in the country.
In our locality we call it San Juan or Biray. We do come to the beach, bring foods, drinks and play sounds. The whole family are coming.
Others call it Wattah Wattah Festival related to water activities.
Every year there are always reported cases of drowning due to the carelessness of the people. They go swimming on the beach drunk.

There is a current water crisis. Prudence dictates that everybody do their best to conserve water. The Mayor of San Juan should have put a stop to the fiesta water throwing festivities. It becomes vulgar when water is wasted at a time when 13 million are very much affected.
The beach party is okay. Your family has made a good decision to spend the fiesta there and give tribute to my most favorite of saints - the very vocal John, the precursor of Christ.
Happy fiesta.

I agree to that but our current mayor is outgoing so she might not thought of it being prudent to water saving at this moment. This will usually last up to 12 noon. After that no one is allowed to douse water with anyone anymore and everything will be back to normal.

@rsa101 Splashing water is fun and everyone should enjoy it. If there's a KJ he better stays at home.

@Nakitakona What if someone is obliged to get out? There is not way not to get wet? I love parties and celebration, but I like when people respect the others.

@LadyDuck They're no forcing them. They're just for fun. But in Ati-atihan Festival, that's different. Everyone who is in the festival must have get a "buling", a makeup of oiled charcoal just like in the picture. image credits to the owner (ctto)

That sounds fun. And it is so relevant for the hot season. Enjoy it
Hope people are careful around beaches to avoid drowning and other accidents.

I've never heard of this festival. It looks very refreshing with the exceptions of the drownings of course.
