Vacation over, she was to spend a bit of time with her grandparents before going back home

She'd never make it back home.
Denise Clinton was asleep on the daybed in her grandparents suite at the motel they managed. It was 2:20 in the morning and the bell rang, indicating that there was a customer. Dorothy left the suite and went to assist a handsome, blue eyed and soft spoken man. The man pulled a gun on her and requested that she "say nothing, just give me the money." Dorothy complied, and the man escorted her back to her suite where he tied up Denise's grandparents.
The man left and her grandparents managed to disentangle themselves. That's when they realized that their granddaughter was missing.
Denise would be found, unfortunately should would be found 800 miles from home, her body dumped near a National Monument in Wyoming.
More info can be found in the link I provide, however, I will go ahead and warn that the girl was not merely killed.

I wonder what the connection between the robbery and the kidnapping is. There are many options. Maybe they only intended to commit a robbery and they saw the girl and decided to kidnap her a) because they thought they could get more money from the grandparents that way b) because they wanted to rape her c) because she recognized them d) because of something else?
Or maybe it was the other way around. They wanted the girl and they did the other things to keep the grandparents away while they kidnapped her. No matter what it is a very sad case.

I think it was either C) She recognized them or A) because they thought they'd get more money that way.
I was reading on the subreddit and apparently there were kindnappings for ransoms going on around that time. It could be that the person (as it was only one that supposedly went into the house) saw the kid and thought they might be able to get more that way... Or the kid recognized the person, or else the person thought the kid could indentify him.
I do not think that the person who took her did so to harm her, but that's just a gut feeling. However, there was no ransom note involved and so it's more likely she was taken because she could identify them.

@ScribbledAdNauseum That would take sense - that they took her because she would be able identify them. It is possible that they didn't intend to harm her.
I remember a case from my country where a 12-year-old girl was killed. The person who did it didn't intend to kill her, but when he abducted her she recognized him and said his name. He killed her because she recognized him.

@Porcospino Say that the man who stole the money was the one that the little girl recognized, so he took her. However, the man that was asleep in the backseat was the one that assaulted her. I feel like it was either that, and the man who assaulted her, killed her...
Or.. the robbery was staged and the true intention was to get the girl. She had been on vacation and had come back but was spending one night with the grandparents... Someone other than the parents had to be aware of that.
I guess we will never know. One of the theories is that the man in jail (who gave them information) was actually one of the men involved in her kidnapping, perhaps the man who robbed the hotel and stole her. He might have had the intentions of asking for a ransom, but his friends were demented and did atrocious things to her. It would make sense if he wanted to somehow cleanse his soul a little by giving up some information, even if he never admitted to taking part in it.

@rakski Yes, Forensic technology was much different even ten years ago. I can imagine 50 years ago it would have been vastly different.

Yes, it's sad what goes on in this world. This was 50 years ago (give or take) and yet these things are still happening today.

I don't watch those shows, but that's only because I hardly watch television. I get most of my mysteries from the web.
