Subliminal Shopping - Part 2

Quite a few of you responded to Part 1 that you stick to your shopping list and don't deviate. However, I'm still going to bring you Part 2 in the hopes that you will find it interesting. These are ways that grocery stores hope to make you spend more money: Making shopping carts larger so that you will spend more. Over 60 percent of shoppers change their minds about purchasing an item/s and "off-load" them at the checkout. Grocery stores make the checkout lanes narrower so that it's harder to get rid of your items at the last minute. Stores will do whatever they can to make you stay a little longer. Maybe you just came in for milk and bread; but they hope you will leave with a lot more. A lot of stores play super-slow music so that you will spend more time in the store and spend up to an average of 29% more. Experts say wear headphones with some upbeat music playing. Some of the same cheeses displayed in the deli counter are available in the dairy case much cheaper. The packaging isn't as fancy; but the cheese is just as good. Do not assume if something is displayed in an end cap that it's for sale. Companies pay for the privilege of promoting their products this way. Just because something is advertised in your weekly circular does not necessarily mean that it's on sale. Many items advertised are at full price. Unless you yell, "HALT", I will have more tips to come. @CarolDM made the point that when items are on sale people tend to buy them whether you need them or not. I'd like to add that people will buy more of that item and "stock up" at a sale price. Photo credit: Pixabay

Sale items always make you buy them too whether you need them or not.

My husband is good at buying 10x what we need, sale or not; but that's a good point...I'll add that. Thanks.

I hate when stores do this. Example: cereal is 2 for $4 or $2.99 for one. People are tempted to buy 2 boxes of cereal because that makes the price per box cheaper but in the end people spend more money than what it costs to get one box. And they don't even need two boxes but they will get two anyway because they are thinking they are saving. But in the end they are spending more money, so they are not really saving. Sometimes I am one of these people but usually I try to stay away from that and just get the one item.

@LindaOHio Why would it if it is not open and the expiration date is far away?

@lovebuglena I'm just saying if someone doesn't eat that much cereal and buys 2 boxes just for the sale. It was just a "for instance" comment.

Yeah, that second box will go stale before you ever use it.

I knew the grocery store isn't our friend, but they go to a lot, just never knew how much.

Very good advice! I've learned at stores like Costco and Sam's that buying in bulk isn't always the best idea. You have to think about what storage space you have, plus they tend to have name brand items and I can often buy the Walmart brand at Walmart for less money.

Love Great Value and Equate. We save so much buying Walmart brands. Also I've found that buying the bigger package is not necessarily a bargain. I bought granola bars 5/pckg. and 10/pckg.; and the 10/pckg. were $.10 more apiece.

@LindaOHio At Walmart, one avocado is 98 cents, but a bag of three is over $4! Same kind from same country. Those are for people who don't do the math and think buying more in a bag is cheaper.

Again, I am oblivious to all that. I am an in and out as quickly as possible person.
