The Cradle of the Civil War

Today’s journey?
I am following the river down the highway
To the cradle of the Civil War
(Paul Simon, “Graceland”)
I spent the day seeing what America can do to itself. My destination when I started this morning was Shiloh National Military Park. I made it at dusk, getting sidetracked by informational signs along the highway.
I’ll explore Shiloh tomorrow. Today, however, was a trip back through history, stopping at two other battlefields that were important in the Civil War.
The major battlefield was Fort Donelson. This (and, from what I briefly saw at Shiloh, other battlefields) is beautifully laid out (if a place where a war between Americans took place can be called such), with signs in blue (depicting the details of the Union army) and red (the Confederacy) explaining the battle that occurred at that battlefield in detail. There are also markers that show troop positioning, explanations of the weapons used, and why that particular battle was important.
I’ll detail another Civil War stop in another discussion. The beauty of these historic sites stands in such stark contrast to the awful bloodshed that occurred there.

Are you following me? I was at Fort Donelson. The visitors center is temporarily closed and located in the chamber of commerce outside the park. I also did Shiloh, Stones River and Chickamauga and Chattanooga battlefields. It is strange to look at these serene places of nature and think of the bloodbaths that occurred over a few days. The body counts at these battles were unreal.

Just checking to see what damage you did.
I jump off after here, I think. I don’t want to be on the road during the holiday next week. My plan (ha) is to visit Shiloh, then go to Memphis in the meantime (yet another John Hiatt reference for your vacation), up I-55, then home following the path of the Tri-State Tornado of 1925.
But I’m retired, I have nothing scheduled before my colonoscopy, the bills are already paid for July, and hotels have laundry services, so that schedule is like the speed limit in Nashville (merely a suggestion)....

@FourWalls Always bad to travel during holidays. Bad enough hotel rates jump on weekends.

Thank you for the travel tour. We visited Gettysburg where they reenacted a great battle. It was memorable.

I went to Gettysburg when I was a kid and didn’t fully understand the impact of that battle or the war itself.

I have a friend who does Civil War re-enactments. The detail they put into those re-enactments is staggering.
