My job does not make me sit at the computer for long hours. However when I'm working on a presentation, etc I do spend a few hours continuously. Is there anyway to avoid eye strain and headaches during these times? What works for you?

I just read an article on this. One, adjust the brightness so it is not overly bright and matches the brightness of the room around you. Also, take eye "breaks" by looking away from screen for 20 seconds every so often, staring at the distance about 20 feet away.

@pitstop it adjusts the screen light according to time of the day.. like less strain at night.. more brightness on specific time etc.

Make sure that your chair is adjusted to give you the correct posture. Make sure that the lighting in the room is correct - the screen and the ambient light should be approximately the same intensity. If the room is too dark, your eyes will need to work harder to adjust; if the room is too light, it may be difficult to read the screen. Every 5 or 10 minutes look away from the screen and allow your eyes to focus on something at a distance - look out of the window, for example. Every half hour (at least) get up and walk around.

I use photo-chromatic glasses which reduces the brightness. I also do those eye movement exercises.

I know you're supposed to look up from the computer from time to time and focus on something a bit further away. But it's easier said than done.

@pitstop Yes, that's true. That's why I said it's easier said than done. Maybe you need to set a timer for each half-hour and get up and move around a bit.

I would suggest a good posture and correct distance of your screen. Also having a screen protection. And taking few breaks and giving a rest to your eyes.

Some says that you should focus on the monitor for only 20 minutes at a time then you should rest your eye on it. If you get dry eyes already a drop of that artificial tear can soothe your irritated eyes.

Taking a mini-break seems to be the most common suggestion.

In addition to adjusting the bright, also do eye exercises.
