Black History: Black Hockey Players #5 - PK Subban

Face it. Hockey is basically considered a white sport, full of Canadians, Americans, and Europeans that have been playing since they learned to walk. As a hockey fanatic, I am often asked, by people that do not follow the sport, an innocent, curious question: "Are there any black hockey players?" Yes, and I am counting down ten of those guys, in no particular order. We are at #5: PK Subban.
You actually might have heard of PK Subban, if for no other reason than that he is the current beau of American superstar skier Lindsay Vonn, who has stated publicly that Mr. Subban is "The One." But we are here to talk about Subban's on-ice skills. Of which he has plenty.
A big, physical, hard-hitting player, PK Subban is one of the NHL's top defensemen (in 2013, Subban won the Norris Trophy, awarded annually to the league's best defenseman.) In addition to his bruising style of play, (he is so physical that he is often considered a villain in other cities, routinely booed whenever he touches the puck, especially here in Denver, where fans haven't forgotten a questionable playoff hit two seasons ago,) Subban also has a wicked slap shot, which routinely finds the back of the net.
PK Subban has played 10 seasons in the NHL, all for both the Montreal Canadiens and the Nashville Predators, although, as the result of an off-season trade, next season he will make his debut with the New Jersey Devils.
During those 10 seasons, he has played in 645 NHL regular season games and 96 post-season games, racked up 98 goals (and 18 in the playoffs,) served up 310 assists (44 in the playoffs,) and has served 718 penalty minutes (133 playoffs.) In addition, as a member of Team Canada, Subban has won an Olympic Gold Medal, and two Junior World Championship Gold Medals.
Basically, dude is on the way to the Hall of Fame.

Is that a lot of penalty minutes?

Yes. He definitely won't be winning the Lady Bing Trophy, awarded annually to the "most gentlemanly player," anytime soon!

I am a hockey fan, Favorite team is the San Jose Sharks. I've always been surprised so few people of color are in the ranks. But the few that I have seen have been very good. Of course one doesn't make it to the professional ranks if one isn't any good.

It seems that the black players all grew up in Canada, where the entire country shuts down for Hockey Night in Canada.
We just signed Dotsoi from you guys. Good, solid player, a great addition for the Avalanche!

@teamfreak16 ah, The Avalanche, one of the teams that everyone loves to hate. Or at least it used to be that way when Roy was the goalie. I've not been following it close as of late but I still love to sit and watch the games.

@cperry2 - The good old days! The Avalanche, Red Wings, and Stars teams of the mid-late 90's/early 2000's were stacked. Fun times.

He likes Bobby Cox, doesn’t he....loves getting thrown out of the game (even if only two minutes at a time).

@teamfreak16 -- I think that was Sweet Lou's excuse a time or two. Which reminds me of one of my favorite sports commercials EVER.
Believe it or not - Chris Viverito is the 'other' umpire in this commercial. Don't blink or you'll miss him. Yes...both times! LOL

Remember back when managers simply couldn't stand what they were seeing on the field and purposely get themselves ejected just so they didn't have to watch it any longer?

@FourWalls - I remember that commercial. Nobody could pull off a meltdown like Pinella! I seem to remember Bobby Valentine pulling that stunt a couple times as well!

He sounds like a good player, although I don't like the violence in hockey. Lindsey Vonn seems to date only fellow athletes!

It makes sense. Fellow athletes already know what you are going through in order to be successful. Probably why Andre Agassi and Brooke Shields didn't last, but he and Steffi Graf have.

A few. Paul Kariya is of Japanese descent, and he's a Hall of Famer. He's the most notable, but there are others.

@Ronrybs - Sports are becoming more and more global. Talent is talent, regardless of where it's from.

@teamfreak16 I suppose it is like football over here, just starting to get Asian players into the teams, if what I read is right, I don't watch football either!

Definitely heard of him. Still going strong! He was so dominant when he played with Montreal against the Bruins in the Stanley Cup. Boston had so much trouble containing him.

He's a beast. I would not like to get in the way of that slap shot!
