A new month and half way through the year already. The first day decimated my welfare payment as all my direct debits and a few other bills had to go out. I had some voluntary work helping to create course material for the social work students coming to the university in the Autumn. We were given our lunch for attending too. Tuesday 2nd July was a routine job search and shopping day Wednesday 3rd July. I got a summons message to come in for a welfare hearing next week, my first in three months. This was cancelled and immediately replaced with a new date and time for the day after that, and it looks as if I'm getting a new advisor which is sad as my current one is quite pleasant with me. Quite a few welfare advisors are horrible to deal with. More voluntary work followed, making short films by talking to camera about the voluntary work I do so students can study the material without me having to come in too often for these particular projects. I was also invited to write some articles for the volunteer group newsletter. Arthur Chappell

I think it's an excellent thing to do volunteer work if you are not currently employed. You never know what kind of valuable connections you can develop, and of course volunteer work looks great on a resume, as well.

@AliCanary very much my thinking, an the work itself is rewarding - there are some great people on the volunteering team and support staff

@arthurchappell - Yes, you can get a lot of free on-the-job training, as well as making friends and helping people. There's really no downside!

These advisors are in work, they're paid, so why do they have to behave like that towards those who would also like to be?

I'm glad to see that you are keeping busy; and as Ali says, you never know what kind of networking you can do with this group while doing volunteer work.
