1957 - John Lennon and Paul McCartney meet for the first time, 3 years before the Beatles are formed.
1854 - The first convention of the United States Republican Party is held in Jackson, Michigan.
1918 - Sebastian Cabot was born. He was an English-Canadian actor best-known for his role of Mr. French in the Family Affair (1966-1971) and Carl Hyatt in Checkmate (1960-1962). He also narrated all the Winnie the Pooh movies. He died in 1977.
1925 - Merv Griffin was born. He was an American actor, singer, producer, TV host and media mogul. He hosted the Merv Griffin Show from 1965-1986. He is best-known for creating Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. He died in 2007.
1927 - Janet Leigh was born. She was an American actress and author. She is best-known for her role as Marian Crane in the 1960 movie Psycho. She was married to Tony Curtis from 1951-1962 and is the mother of Jamie Lee Curtis of Halloween fame. She died in 2004.
