How The Horse was arrested in Nebraska (a true story)

I think I forgot to do a post about why I was arrested in Nebraska on my way to a college reunion in Iowa. I was driving through Nebraska, under the speed limit, when a Highway Patrol officer pulled me over. He claimed I was following the driver in front of me too closely and asked for my drivers license and insurance info. He never did go back to his car, but started asking me questions about where I was going, how long I was going to stay, why I had a bike with me, etc. I have to be honest and say he was super nice (as am I). As we were talking, I realized that it was my California plates that had led me to be pulled over. Marijuana is legal in California, and I figured that Californians were importing marijuana into states like Nebraska and selling it at a profit. I also figured that he must not have been able to see, from his angle, that I'm a middle-aged man who looks more like a college professor (which I am) than a drug runner. He released me with a mutual laugh and a "have fun," and I continued to my final destination for that day which was Eastern Nebraska, close to Iowa. It turns out I was only partially right. When I got to my motel, I asked the staff there why a Highway Partol officer would pull over a middle-aged guy for no reason (I wasn't really tailgating). They informed me I was right about the California plates, and the marijuana importation, but wrong about who is bringing marijuana into Nebraska. It turns out that middle-aged men and women are serving as coyotes or mules, bringing California pot into Nebraska. I was glad that I had consciously decided not to bring any marijuana with me on my road trip, knowing that it was not legal in most of the states I'd be passing through. The photo of San Quinten is from my trip to Tiburon yesterday. The lesson: You don't have to be Mexican or black or look like a hippy to be pulled over these days. MyLotters, beware!

Even though we were really, Really late catching our plane in Doha, we were thoroughly patted down and our cases searched by the customs officers. It seems older people are just as much under suspicion.

@TheHorse It gave me the giggles. Maybe I need to watch the whole film and get into the mood more.

My son and I got pulled over in a vacant mall parking lot. He needed some night driving experience and I didn't want him actually on the city streets just yet so the mall (that had closed a few years before) seemed like the best place (it was also only a mile from our house). It was also in a notoriously bad part of town (a large factor in why it closed). The expression on the police officer's face when we didn't fit what he was expecting was worth being lectured on how bad this particular part of town was. "Yes, officer, we live over on ______ Lane this seemed like a safer place to practice night driving."

Middle-aged white men beware! But heck, I've kind of felt that way for awhile! Even in California.

I do know quite a few people looking like middle-aged professors (men and women). Suspicious lot, I'd pulled them over. Quite of few of them are likely to have the car filled with weeds (biologists, they just love weeds). Or possibly a horse trailer with a horse in it, so I'd like to say hello. Not sure who I'd use to smuggle here. Possibly myself, 'cause I have a very non-suspicious car.

It was on the way home. Ironic that San Quinten is in Marin County.
