Don't Panic

As some of you know, I have two cats - my gorgeous Ollie (also known as Ollie Flops on account of his going completely floppy when you pick him up) and Dusky our feisty little madam. Last night at about 10.00 Ollie was desperate for me to go out in the garden and play with him which I happily did. He then wandered off into the meadow at the bottom of our garden when he got bored. I went indoors and went to bed. I got up a bit later this morning ... around 6.45 ... and usually Ollie's waiting eagerly for his breakfast but this morning he wasn't there. By 8.00 he still wasn't home so Adam and I went out calling his name and then resorted to shaking the cat biscuit packet ... still no sign. At around 9.15 he sauntered in through his cat flap as if nothing had happened. Heaven knows where he'd been but needless to say he was picked up and cuddled for a while. He had his breakfast and he's now gone out again ... just hope he's home before dinner at 6.00!! Some people think we're mad for loving our cats but they're our children. Both were from the RSPCA rescue centre so had had pretty miserable lives before they came here and all we want to do is protect them from abuse in the future and give them a carefree and loving home.

I've noticed here in the UK that people are always keen to support children's charities but fewer support animals. I consider that animals are very much like children but look different but all life is precious - hence the reason I've become a vegan.

@olliesmum Is that right? I thought it was the other way around - that people were more likely to give charity to animals than to people - partly because they percieve animals as helpless but people as more responsible for their own circumstances.

@Fleura I've noticed that when people are collecting for a human charity there's always a constant stream of donors but when it's for the RSPCA, Cats' Protection etc donors are rather scarce. Also, when I watch celebrity quiz shows so many of them give to human charities and few give to animals.

Glad he turned up safe and sound. Who knows what sort of double life he leads? He could have been out prowling the rooftops all night or he could have been sleeping comfortably on someone else sofa, you will probably never know!

Knowing Ollie he was out in the meadow looking for rats, mice, voles, moles or squirrels! He's a great hunter but I don't understand why he'll kill something but then only eat the head!! He always brings home his headless catches. Maybe he thinks their brains will make him more intelligent??

I'm always the same when he's not home at breakfast or dinner time and yet I know that he loves being outside. We're just happy for him to live his own life with minimal restrictions but I'm always concerned he may have been run over by a car or stolen. Having said that we live in a very quiet area with very little traffic and our village has the lowest crime rate in our region!

Good for you. I really admire people who take in rescue cats. It's such a great thing to do.
