When we visited Arizona, one of the attractions we stopped to see was Meteor Crater, 37 miles east of Flagstaff in the northern Arizona desert. Meteor Crater was named after a nearby post office at the time named Meteor. It is also called Barringer Crater after Daniel Barringer who was the first to suggest that it was caused by a meteorite impact. The crater is privately owned by the Barringer family. The crater is 3,900 feet in diameter, 560 feet deep and is surrounded by a rim that rises 148 feet above the surrounding plains. It was created about 50,000 years ago when the area was inhabited by mammoths and giant ground sloths. The meteor itself is estimated to have been about 160 feet across. Do you wonder who was there to record this happening? This is one I have not seen in person, although I have been in Flagstaff.
