Postcard From A Death Camp

photo taken by me - Dachau postcard

This is a genuine Dachau Concentration camp postcard. It wasn't sent to me. I just bought it for its unusual subject matter and it is not one I would post out to anyone. While everyone should be educated in the horrors of the Holocaust, especially at a time when Trump is running concentration camps for migrants, refugees and their often separated children, receiving a postcard about the camps would jut create a shock reaction rather than encouraging anyone to learn more. It is certainly a stark contrast to the usual happy holiday images of monuments and churches though. Arthur Chappell

@arthurchappell Well put! I think it's a wise idea to not keep anyone sheltered from such a thing or sugarcoat the truth of something so horrific that took place in history or even what is happening right now like you said with Trump!

@VivaLaDani13 yes, we are dangerously close to history repeating itself

@arthurchappell I agree with you. How people can't see that surprises me.

It is shocking that postcards were ever created but education is crucial!

@Michellekidwell yes, teaching everyone about the camps is very important but not like this

@Michellekidwell Michelle there were lots of postcards. There was one that showed of a little boy with a yellow star that was a survivor of the Holocaust. He became someone very famous here in Israel. I used to work in a bookstore that had postcards of survivors and I met some of them. They would come in the store and point out them in the post card. People here in Israel lead the March of the Living where people go to the camps and learn about what happened. Students are taken over there to learn what happened. Holocaust education is needed everywhere.

@Hannihar Yes I definitely agree, sadly to many have little to no education on the subject, and if we don’t learn from the past we are sadly bound to repeat it!

This is something we have not seen before nor heard of, although we had some relatives who escaped from Germany when Hitler was coming into power. Where did you find it for sale?

@PatZAnthony bought from the camp itself which is open as a museum, though on the European tour I was on, we saw only the outer area as several tourists with us were uncomfortable about going in. I would have liked to see more.

@arthurchappell It would be uncomfortable for many. Some, maybe especially those who lost family during that time, might want to stay away.

I'm really surprised that these were ever created. I've just finished reading The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas for the second time.

@arthurchappell I'm not sure I want to see the film. The book is very understated in many ways but all the more powerful I think by what isn't said.

@arthurchappell Arthur do you know about Yad Vashem here in Jerusalem. This is a brief information on Yad Vashem: Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center, is the ultimate source for Holocaust education, documentation, commemoration and research. From the Mount of Remembrance in Jerusalem, Yad Vashem's integrated approach incorporates meaningful educational initiatives, groundbreaking research and inspirational exhibits. I used to work in a bookstore there and we had post cards of Holocaust survivors and they would come in to the store and point out who they were. You are right people should learn about the Holocaust and not say it did not happen because I have met survivors and when I was growing up a friend of mine's parents were in the Holocaust and their friends were other survivors. I am not referring to that because what you said about that is right but what you said about Trump is wrong. Trump is a friend to the Jewish People and his daughter converted to Judaim so he would not use the Concentration Camps as you said. Hitler wanted to get rid of all Jews and children were not any different than women, men and elderly. Thank heavens he did not succeed.

@Hannihar it is very fortunate for Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals and many more that Hitler was stopped of course

Interesting postcard. I could not imagine sending such a postcard to anyone. Sort of like saying sorry you're not here and who would want to be there. If Trump ever gets an idea to make postcards from those horrible refugee camps then I say the whole jig is up and this country is being run by the Mad Hatter.

That's quite interesting. Why they have done a postcard for that. Maybe they are promoting the site for tourism...

@simplfred very much so yes and hopefully the tourists will be educated rather than entertained by the centres
