As you may have heard, the question about citizenship has become quite controversial for the 2020 United States census. Some think it could be used as a way to find people who are not citizens.but that is not the purpose. The purpose is to find how many people are in a place at a given time,to help allocate government resources and votes.Persona;lly I have found it helpful when searching ancestors from other countries. What do you think?

My household currently includes five citizens and one non-citizen.i think citizenship is as valid as any other census query.

I have been curious about this because some of my ancestors are not on every census.I do have a naturalization certificate of 1 of them so I know I'm a citizen ;)

@Aquitaine24 My children are all American citizens because their father is and they were born here. They are also all legally Canadian citizens as well since their Mom is Canadian.

The sole Constitutional purpose of the census is to determine the number of people residing in each state for the purposes of calculating the number of members each state is entitled to elect to the House of Representatives. Any questions on the census not directly associated with this determination are not Constitutionally valid and may be of questionable legality. That's why answering any but the questions about the number of people in your household are voluntary though the government won't tell you that.

It's a good way of finding people with dual citizenship.

it is being used by racists to try to find excuses to harrass and even deport immigrants - it is good that the question has been kept off the census there

If you want to know how many people are in a given place, then you don't need a citizenship question. Just count them.
