E'en Mr. Squirrel melted!

United States

Yup, poor fella came down through the trees to grab a bite to eat'n jest collapsed. 'twas 107 degrees Saturday. Usually my lil sanctuary 'd still be somewhat bearable, but nary a breeze blew so 'twas jest melty hot. I 'xpect this sorta weather this time 'f year. The hubs complains 'bout 't near constant. Too hot, too cold, too windy, not 'nough breeze, etc. Nearly 'nough to drive a gal straight o'er the edge, lol. Seems we might'a narrowed down the mystery 'f Mr. Squirrels odd 'rrival here 't my place. Squirrels aint native to these parts, though they've some'n town 't the golf course. Some folks trapped some from there a while back'n took 'em to their new house 'bout 3 miles north 'f here. I figure this 'un 'twas tryin' to find his way back home (perhaps he's a missus 'n some young'uns??) 'n found 't safer jest to stay here'n my lil sanctuary than to try to make 't back home (which'd be 'bout 12 more miles with lots 'f predators). The hubs says he could trap 'nother squirrel from said golf course'n bring this lil fella a friend, so's he'd not be lonesome. I'm thinkin' perhaps we ought'a try to trap Mr. Squirrel 'n take him back to town 'n rejoin his family. What would'ja do'n this case? I 'dore the precious gift 'f watchin' him daily, but 'lso 've a great guilt 'f him bein' the sole lil squirrel. Feel he 'twas robbed by a humans greed 'n thus should be returned.

i think perhaps he would'a jest passed'n through 'n braved the rough elements if'n i'd not a food 'n water source. used to joke with the hubs when he'd go play golf - to snag a couple squirrels 'n bring 'em home. joked'n here fer folks to send me some squirrels. 'twas jest that though. i do 'njoy watchin' him. jest don't feel 'tis right.

The heat is too much on all of us critters. Great shot. Hoping you get a break soon from the heat. The squirrel may not be lonesome at all. He might be content by himself.

yes ma'am. i feel fer all 'f 'em, though such'd be nature. seein' lil birds pantin' 'n this lil squirrel jest melt'n a puddle 'tis a tad comical, i must confess. which's mean... he might be? 't least fer now he seems purty content. he'd be happier if'n that juvenile blue jay'd leave him be, lol.

I like your husbands idea. Then you wouldn't feel guilty about watching and enjoying them. maybe even get some 2 or 3 more and put little different colors of dots on their backs before setting them free and you could tell them apart and name them. That would be such fun.

nah, i think such'd be most cruel, hon. 'tis been fun havin' this lil fella 'round, but's sure caused me great stress when i don't seem 'im. if'n i'd more, i'd worry that much more. if'n he shows back'p, i've plans to capture 'n release him back'n town 't the golf course. wonder what the fine'll be fer his return??

His stretched out legs sure show he's just had enough! Sounds like it's a bit hotter out there than here . . . we are in the 100s now, but not as high as 107 (yet). I didn't realize Mr. Squirrel was that solo . . . I can't imagine as out here squirrels are just about everywhere. One can't be too sure about compatibility if you bring another one in - they could either become best of friends or get at each other's throats . So yah, I do think taking him back to his family/community would be the best thing for him.

yes ma'am, lol. i catch the lil fella layed out'n branches from time to time, due to the heat, but this 'twas the 1st i'd seen 'f him jest sorta meltin' there'n the crook 'f a branch :) i hope ya don't reach those high temps, hon. then 'gain, y'all've lots more concrete there so prolly feels hotter?? seems the red squirrels'd be that way, not the grey? i dunno, that solitary thingy'd jest be what i read 'bout 'em. i've fergotten most all i though i knew 'bout tree squirrels, 'tis been so long since i've been 'round 'em. the hubs says he's heard they're catchin' 'n dispersin' the squirrels 'round town?? too many 't the golf course 'r some nonsense. mostly like those ritzy folks who reside there complained too loudly 'n flashed some $$ 't their home owners 'ssociation. my fear 'f capturin' a female 'n bringin' such out here'd be the possibility 'f inbreedin'?? i dunno. now that i'm privy to 'em bein' caught 'n released all o'er the place, maybe he ought'a jest stay here? those traps can be quite traumatic 'n such's 'lready happened once. i did call the county wildlife folks'n ya know what they said? if'n i didn't wish the lil fella here, jest shoot 'im!

@BelleStarr 'twas cooler temps here the past few days 'n very o'ercast. the sun's finally shinin' 'fter a somewhat dismal start to the day, lol. i saw mr. squirrel earlier. seems he's been hidin' 'p'n the big bradford pear, dinin' 'pon those ne'er gonna be a pear lil marbles that hang. perhaps i should get 'nother (pear tree) someday?

the hubs's offered to go snag a few more. i dunno if'n such'd be a good idea? i've read these red squirrels'd be solitary dwellers 'n fear there'd not be room fer more. i've not seen him since saturday 'n hope that nothin' bad's happened.

The trouble with squirrels is that they can become quite a pest and bite through electric wires. I would let him grow mateless and let him stay on your little bit of paradise!

i wonder what the fascination with electrical wires 'd be with 'em?? thus far this'un aint damaged much 'sides my green bean patch'n the apples that're not yet ripe. i've found this particular species'd be solitary 'n 'nly seeks a partner'n the spring fer breedin' season. i'm half tempted to leave him here, but then the sensible part 'f me says he needs to be returned. if'n the indication'd be he came'n his own 'ccord, such'd be diff'rent. i aint too fond 'f folks removin' wild critters 'n haulin' 'em elsewhere fer their own satisfaction.

It's sad he was trapped and ended up at your place. I think he likes it there and if he wants to leave, let him. You're enjoying his company and he doesn't seem to want to leave, even with those greedy birds not wanting to share their food with him.

yes ma'am, made me more'n a bit cranky to find this's most likely how he 'rrived here. i fear the lil darlin' 'd need to cross many miles 'f open country 'n cross major roadways to return home'n his own. i 'magine he's faced lots 'f birds'n his lil lifetime, lol.

It's hard to say what's best here. Do squirrels develop a territory and would he be in danger if returned? I guess that would be my worry. Poor little thing looks very hot!

i know :( yes ma'am, these red squirrels 're solitary 'n thus territorial. which makes the dilemma that much more perplexin' i fear. seems they mate'n spring 'n then go off'n their way (typical male, eh?). then 'gain, he'd more food sources back't the golf course. lots 'f homes 'n trees ('f e'ry sort - e'en lots 'f oaks, which'd provide him with acorns), versus here with jest my few (i've no oaks, 'nly 1 pine survived the drought, etc). yes ma'am, he jest sort'a melted once he'd reached this point. jest right 'bove the feeder.

@JudyEv he don't seem to mind the absence 'f such? he's a cheeky lil dude. i finally spied him this morn, high'p'n the bradford pear. dunno why he'd be eatin' those lil, tiny pears? there'd be no other bradfords 'round so 't doesn't bear true fruit. jest lil green pear shaped objects 'bout the size 'f a u.s. dime.

yes ma'am. i'm really leanin' towards catchin' him 'n sneakin' him back to the golf course. gotta figure a trap that'll not catch all the other critters, too. since he 'n the skunk like similar thingies, such might be a tad more interestin' than i've plans fer, lol.

aw, what cuties! no sir, i'd rather not split'p yer lil family. the trouble with this lil darlin' 'd be limited food supply. i've 'nly one survivin' pine tree (thanks, drought!) 'n the berries'n the junipers 'n such 'nly last a short time (birds). jest don't seem morally correct not to try'n help the lil fella get back to his homeland.

'tis sort'a a moral dilemma fer me. i dunno why folks do such, 'tis jest more competition fer the natives (be 't critters 'r plants). i shall mull 't o'er 's the winter out here can be brutal. i've quite a few cedars 'n junipers, but come late autumn he'll not 've much cover.
