The Downside of the High-Tech Life

Gizmos and gadgets. We all have them or at least have access to them (you can’t access the internet without SOMETHING). I’ve never been big about having the latest tech toys, but over the past several years I’ve gotten used to having a few handy gadgets around that I use all the time. Unfortunately, my gadgets have decided that my vacation over the next two weeks is going to be somewhat low-tech. My laptop, that I use to access journal and store photos when I travel is metaphorically up on blocks in the backyard. The charging port is broken and the piece necessary for my son to repair it has not yet arrived. My smartphone isn’t actually dead but has become a bit twitchy lately. At least once a day it suddenly decides that the battery is completely dead and it shuts down. Sometimes I can turn it back on five minutes later and it still has a 70% charge other times I need to leave it plugged in for at least 15 minutes before it will even let me power it back up again. It’s probably time to replace the phone but I’m not ready to spend money on it just yet so I’ll continue to muddle through. Unfortunately, that means taking photos this trip (the ones I can’t upload to my laptop) might be challenging. And then there is my Kindle. As far as I know, there is nothing wrong with my Kindle. Unfortunately, it has gone missing. It looks like I’m going to have to pack a notebook and a few pens. AND I’ll have to resort to a tote-bag full of reading material. I don’t mind going low-tech, except that my travel essentials will take up significantly more room! The photo shows the shore of Prince Edward Island overlooking the Gulf of St Lawrence. I'm hoping for warmer weather than my previous visits.

I use to love all my tech gadgets, and I used to be so on top of all the latest technology as it's come up. But I find myself falling farther behind theses days, and understanding it less and less. Thank God I still have two teenagers in the house who can show me how to do everything! LOL When they move out I'm probably in big trouble. Might force myself to go lo-tech. But then again, being that I love the great outdoors, and camping, hiking and kayaking, that maybe lo-tech isn't so bad!

@SophiaMorros I agree on the downside of lo-tech. Definitely will have to pack more stuff! lol

I like my laptop on trips for journalling and photo dumping. And my Kindle for reading in the evening. The phone gets more use as a camera than anything else. Lowtech just means I'll pack more stuff.

You'll feel good about this low tech life. I have experienced it during brownouts and it's when I enjoyed daydreaming or playing and having fun with family

I don't mind going low-tech. My husband just gets annoyed with me when I have to drag a big tote bag to hold my journal, my Bible, my current devotional book, my pleasure read, a spare pleasure read, a camera...

We're going away for a fortnight soon and I'll probably be without internet access. But that's okay. It's not quite so bad in a vehicle but if you're flying, books can be very weighty.

We'll be driving. But space will be tight since we're also lugging our camping gear.
