Our annual "Legends" tournament in miniature golf was this weekend. We crowned two new champions.
I've written before about this crazy world of miniature golf. We have a Hall of Fame player who lives in Alabama (where there are no Putt Putt courses) who drives to our courses to play (as well as the ones on the southern tour in Virginia and North Carolina). We poor amateur schmucks spend $200 on hotels and food for the weekend so we can hopefully get our $40 entry fee back by winning. (PPA rules forbid amateurs from "making money" on the tour.) In the heat, in the rain, in the cold -- and yes we've played while it's sleeted -- we're there, sharing friendship and an inexplicable love of the game.
Today was an absolute DELIGHT. Since my division finished first, I got to watch the pros play their final round. The two players who finished first and second were paired together (we're paired, much like professional golfers, based on our scores, and tee off in inverted order, worst to first). In the eighth and final round there was a whopping one stroke difference between first and second. Our eventual champion (we call him "Flava" because his last name is Flavin
) shot a twenty. That means, out of 18 holes, he got holes in one on sixteen of them. The runner-up shot a blistering 22...and lost ground.
That also happened in the amateur division. Our winner had a 21 on his last round, while the runner-up shot a 23. Today the pro winner shot a 91 for four rounds. The amateur shot a 99 for four rounds.
And I was content to shoot a 110 today, which was eight strokes better than yesterday. That gave me third place.
Their names are added to the list of Legends.
That's not that big a deal: I've won the tournament. So I'm a Legend in my own mind!

I’ve won the tourney twice (2011 and 2014). That’s good enough.

We have three, maybe four, people who aren’t senior tour eligible. One of our local pros won the national championship in 1968.
Come on and join us! We take a nap break after indulging in the blue plate specials at the cafeteria!
