Can you believe it's August? Homemade Pie Day Respect for Parents Day 1893 - Henry Perky patents shredded wheat. 1981 - MTV begins broadcasting in the United States. Its first video is "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles. 1936 - Yves Saint Laurent was born. Was a French-Algerian fashion designer who co-founded Yves Saint Laurent. He died in 2008. 1903 - Calamity Jane (Martha Jane Canary) passed away. She was born in 1853. She was an American frontierswoman and scout. She wore men's clothes and knew Wild Bill Hickock. (see above) She later appeared in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition. 1872-73 - Captain Egan was in command of the Goose Creek, Wyoming post. He was shot by Indians. Calamity Jane caught him as he was falling off his horse and put him on her horse. Back at the Fort, upon recovering, Capt. Egan said, "I name you Calamity Jane, the heroine of the plains"...and that's how she got her name. Photo Credit: Wikimedia Commons

First time I read that Saint-Laurent was a "French-Algerian". In fact, he was "a French from Algeria" : Algeria was a French département when he was born, and not a family of French origins (his family had migrated there from Colmar in 1871 to not become German when Alsace has been annexed by Germany) had the right to get a dual French/Algerian citizenship when Algeria got its independence in 1962. The only people with a dual citizenship are native Algerians who got the French citizenship (all the native public servants and military were offered to come in France in 1962 ; these ones are/were only French, but the members of their families who migrated later in France have the dual citizenship). I enjoyed the photo and text about Calamity Jane

@LadyDuck He was what we called a "pieds noirs"/black feet. The word was used for people from European origins born in Algeria and under a common law status (most of the natives where under a Muslim law status).

I have met Yves Saint Laurent when we lived in Monte Carlo. We have seen him a few times, a very polite and nice man.
