Summertime Snacks: Boiled Peanuts

Boiled peanuts was a snack that I grew up eating. We lived in the country and when the peanut harvest would come in, we would come home with a sack of green peanuts ready to boil. This was a big event and other family members usually joined in. Boiled peanuts are made with green peanuts dug directly from the garden and cleaned before going into the boiling pot. All you have to do is add salt to make this a savory snack. My grandparents and my mom put these up in ziplock bags and put them in the freezer. That way we had boiled peanuts for a snack until they ran out. We always restocked during the next year's harvest. Have you ever had boiled peanuts? I know they are more popular in the southern states, but you should try them if given the chance. The ones you find in the grocery store canned is nothing in comparison to fresh peanuts just boiled. I have seen boiled peanuts sold on the streets when I visited the United States. I have not tried them, I am allergic to peanuts.

Yes, they are sold on the street and also in convenience stores. I'm sorry you are allergic to peanuts. I'm trying to figure out a food allergy right now and it isn't easy.

When the cajun spices rage became so popular they started throwing the seasoning into the boiled peanuts. I never got used to that and prefer them regular style thank you. Original is sometimes best.

I am surprised that you are familiar with this snack. It is one of the common snacks here. I like it but I don't often make it. Usually we will buy it outside but I know it is quite easy to make it at home.

Growing up in the country it is one of my favorites. I passed this love on to my kids and now it is going on to the grandkids. I didn't realize boiled peanuts were so popular in China.

I have found that you either love them or hate them. They are a great snack when you have a sore throat with all the salt.

We also plant peanuts here in our area. Are there green peanuts? What we have have brown or light brown shell not green.

No not the color green, green just refers to freshly harvested peanuts. When you buy peanuts in most stores they are dried out for roasting.
