My school year that is. Tomorrow is our first teacher workday of the 2019-2020 academic year. On Thursday, we have our Open House. Then, a week from tomorrow the kids come in for their first day. For the most part, I am looking forward to the start of a new school year. I will admit there is a small part of me that will miss the freedom of being able to write or read or myLot at leisure. My upcoming week will be a full one. What sort of week to you have in store?

@DWDavis — everyone else in my library science classes (this was 25 years ago, mind you) were teachers getting a second master’s to get out of teaching.

@FourWalls I've known a few to do that, or get certified as guidance counselors. The lucky ones become PE teachers.

From what I hear about our local public schools, anxiety throughout the state is high this year due to a growing teacher shortage. Rumor has it that retired teachers can go back to work and teach in high-risk schools for the equivalent of a starting teacher's salary and keep 100% of their pension. Several retired teachers I know have told me it still wouldn't be worth it.

I remember the first days of school. The new students, most of them on their good behavior until the following week. Now that I am retired I find myself remembering them with fondness.

The first few days of school are always the honeymoon period.

@andriaperry I talk about moving into an apartment after our retirement road trip years are over, but the missus is firmly opposed.

@DWDavis I know, one day I will slow down and move into an apartment with nothing to do.

@DWDavis that's what MrsJ says. She was there for a week 3 years ago and for 4 hours back in March.

Most likely having to go to the local vehicle place to update my home address since my relatives and myself moved to a home after Memorial Day.

Changing address is always a hassle. I'm glad to have been in the same place for almost 25 years now.

Sounds like you start early there. Over here, I think they start at the beginning of September with the kids starting around the middle of the month

Once upon a time in America, we didn't start school until after Labor Day - the first Monday in September. Then it inched its way back to early August. A few years ago, the public schools moved it to the end of August but the private school I teach at now kept it mid-August. On the plus side, barring storms or snow, we get out the Friday before Memorial Day - the last Monday in May.
