Yey! We are officially a pet owner. This is Yogi, our new furbaby. Do not ask me what breed is he because I am not sure. Yogi was given to my sister in law by a friend and this was also given to that friend. So, we do not know who to ask as for the breed. He is 3-4 months. We also survived the first night. At first he cries when my daughter put her in the crate alone. We let her sleep on the couch and when he was sleep we brought him to the crate with a stuff toy beside him. And it works! He did not cry, not until 3:30am when he knew there was someone coming out of the room. We are a newbie, we have a lot of things to learn. Any advice?

What a cute dog!!! The first few months would be kind of delicate especially he looks like new born still. He will be a bit dependent on you on those months until they reach about 6mos to 1 year old when he would start to become more active and playful already. If you survive that stage then you prepare having him check up with a vet for the proper vaccines he need to get as he grows up.

@rakski You can start at 6 mos when he starts to play around already. That is the best time to teach him tricks and train him. For now he needs more rest over play.

yogi 'tis sure a cutie! 'tis sad that he's been passed 'round so much. gonna take a bit fer him to get settled most likely. advice? trainin'. trainin' 'tis a must. make sure he'd be current with all vaccinations'n 's soon's possible, get him fixed. if'n he's not used to sleepin' by himself 'n that'd be yer desire, ya can use the stuffed critter, a hot water bottle (the warmth makes 'em feel like they've littermates to cuddle) 'n e'en a wind-up clock (placed outside the crate so's not to be chewed'n - the sound 'f the tickin' kinda mimics heartbeats).

@rakski do ya have a hot water bottle? the ol' fashioned kind made 'f rubber? if'n so, ya can fill that, wrap'n a light blanket (don't want to burn the pup!) 'n lay next to the pup to snuggle. the warmth'll feel like one 'f 'ts sibling's. dunno if'n mr. yogi likes to chew'n thingies, so be careful what'cha try.

@crazyhorseladycx we do not have that. What I did is to fill a mineral water with warm water and I out it inside an old socks of my daughter and put it beside him. He hugs it immediately. Yes, he likes to bite/chew maybe because of the teeth. I knot some socks and let him bite and play with it. I hope it will do until I buy him some. It has been raining here and now the class is suspended.

I put Luna a warm water bottle the first days. She did not even have a proper house then, but a cardboard house. She never cried.

@marguicha oh okay. I put him in a playpen last night which was double the size of the crate. There is a door but is made of mesh material. I just closed it at night

Whoever is going to be his primary human should keep him close whenever they are home. This will improve the bond. Also, when he is about 6 mos old, look into a basic obedience class. It will be worth every minute.

Oh so little and cute! Advice: pay lots of attention, play a lot, stimulate her brain, and start behavior training early.

You can put a thin sheet over his crate so he won't cry in the night. We had to do that with my dog when she was a puppy. Your Yogi is so cute and tiny!

My kids named him. I also wonder how big will he be? I am still training him, I have no success yet with the pee and poop, but he gets inside his crate when he wants to lie down and sleep

@rakski Welcome Yogi to your new family. Such a cutie. Does Yogi have a vet? You could ask the vet. I was trying to think of what he may home in it and I think it came to me now. Maybe he has pitbull in him.

@rakski Vets know a lot of things. I remember when I got my first cat and wanted to know when her birthday was so asked the vet and he helped me out there. So did you go to the vet?

He needs vaccines. Young dogs can have a severe illness called parvovirosis. It's a fatal disease.
