Is this pineapple ripe enough?

My brother bought a pineapple, but I don't know if it's ripe enough. This one looks like it's not ripe. He didn't know how to select a ripe pineapple. I also don't know. I don't buy pineapple often. Is this pineapple ripe? If not, what can I do?

It's still not ripe enough to eat. You can leave it for couple of days. It should be a little yellow in color by then and you can make out from smell that it is ripe.

@dya80dya Yes. You have to. Keep checking so that it's not overripe.

@mrki444 And from can is cooked? I think it's cooked and it doesn't have so many vitamins.

It looks rather green. Leave it out at room temperature. If you have bananas or other ripe fruit handy, putting them with the pineapple will help ripening. When the colour begins to change, smell the fruit, especially near the stem end. When it smells nicely fruity, it's ready to eat.

@dya80dya I think it depends very much on how unripe the pineapple was when it was picked and how long it's been in storage. It will keep for quite a while at room temperature and, provided that it was beginning to ripen, it should continue to do so once picked. It's certainly worth trying. Bananas give off a lot of the gas which encourages most fruit to ripen, so they are usually very good to put with anything like apples, tomatoes, stone fruit or any other fruit which is mature but not yet ripe. That should also work with pineapples. Most pineapples are not fully ripe when they are picked because, by the time they get to the market, they would be spoiled. Give it several days in the company of bananas or apples and see what happens. It should begin to turn less green, starting at the stem end. Smell it from time to time and you should detect that pineappley smell getting stronger and, when you press it with your fingers, it should give slightly. If nothing much seems to have changed in a week, it's probably not going to ripen. It might be worth, then, cutting it anyway and stewing it gently with sugar. It won't be as good as ripe pineapple, of course, but it might be usable as a pie filling.

@owlwings It started to smell bad. I left it in a warm room with bananas. It's not going to ripen. Unless other fruits pineapples can't ripen after they are picked up. I think it's not going to ripen.

Thanks for the advice. I have bananas. Do you think that it will ripe? I read that pineapples don't ripe properly after they are picked. I think I wasted money with this pineapple.

It is a bit too green, let it out of the refrigerator a couple of days and it will be ready to eat.
