My Ten Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Snubs: Jimmy Buffett (#7)

Remember, before you seethe, this is all opinion. None of it matters to those buffoons in Cleveland, who'll keep inducting personal favorites and ignoring popular acts. After @teamfreak16 listed his ten Hall of Fame snubs I thought I'd do likewise. We've already matched on one (The Smiths), and we have someone else to match on. This person isn't it, though. #7: Jimmy Buffett Yeah, I know. His biggest hit was written in 20 minutes, which sounds about 18 minutes too generous a timeframe. But you know what? You know who the heck Jimmy Buffett is. Buffett is a lot like the Grateful Dead: constant capacity concerts but not much in the way of chart action. Did you know the Dead only had one top 40 hit ("Touch of Gray")? Buffett's best known for that overplayed piece of stuff called "Margaritaville," which -- to his credit -- he's milked for all it's worth. I'm sure he knows the song sucks and moans about it when he cashes his royalty checks. However, as I said, you know who Jimmy Buffett is, and that makes him worthy. It's not a hall of quality (or Steve Miller and Rush would never have been inducted ). I love Buffett's ballads. His "party" stuff? Not so much. But he's sold more albums than two acts in the Hall combined, so...... Here's Buffett's rocker "Livingston Saturday Night" from the film FM:

Yeah, a strong argument can definitely be made in his case. He pretty much invented the laid back stoner guy genre, has a huge legion of loyal fans, and could probably show up somewhere unannounced and sell out the venue through word of mouth, and quickly.

I worked with a bunch of Parrott heads in Cincinnati. they would argue he should have been in 20 years ago.

I’m not a Parrothead by any stretch (haven’t bought an album or seen him since 1986), but when people know what you mean by “Parrothead,” what else do you want in terms of “fame”?

I enjoy Buffett's music and even paid homage to his song "Cheeseburger in Paradise" in my Buzby Beach books with the slogan for Iggie's Burgers and Rings - take out burger joint right on the beach. The slogan is, "These are the Burgers Jimmy Sang About." I also enjoy his books. "A Salty Piece of Land," is one of my favorites.

He's one of those people that there seems to be no middle ground on. I would love to see him do a "club" tour where he just did his ballads and left that let's get drunk and have a cheeseburger in margaritaville 'cause it's 5 o'clock stuff for the summer shows.

No "Cheeseburger in Paradise" for Mr. Cool Caribbean of Rock n' Roll If the Hall's criteria for induction was outstanding live concert performances Jimmy would be in faster than you could drink a Margarita

My daughter used to work for a concert promoter and she had the opportunity to work with Jimmy Buffett. She said that he was the nicest guy. He treated everyone well and even bought lunch for everyone who was working on the show. So refreshing when you hear about some of these so-called stars.

I’ve met him twice, and he is a very nice, down-to-earth guy.

It is a shame that artist Jimmy Buffett is not in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame despite his great track record of singing wonderful songs.

Not enough parrotheads to get him elected? He's in the Margarita Hall of Fame.
