1889 - William Gray is granted a United States Patent for a "coin-controlled apparatus for telephones" (pay phones).
1918 - Women enlist in the United States Marine Corps for the first time.
1895 - Bert Lahr was born. He was an American actor of stage and screen, comedian and vaudevillian. He is best known for his role as the Cowardly Lion/Zeke in the Wizard of Oz.
1899 - Alfred Hitchcock was born. He was an English film director, producer and TV host. He had cameo roles in most of the films he directed. He was the host of Alfred Hitchcock Presents from 1955-1965. Some of his most famous films are: Rear Window, Vertigo, North by Northwest, Psycho, The Birds (see below), Marnie, Dial M for Murder and Torn Curtain. He died in 1980.

Seems like a lot to celebrate. Wow, I had almost forgotten that pay phones existed. I am getting way too old. My memory is fading quickly.
