Does that name sound familiar to you?
It should be a household name. Why?
Well, because we have reason to thank her.
She, along with mechanic George Butters, invented the first successful dishwasher.
Oh, there had been other attempts.
Joel Houghton designed a hand cranked dish soaker in 1850. A decade later, L. A. Alexander added a geared device that allowed you to spin a rack of dishes through a tub of water.
Neither of those inventions were particularly successful. Josephine invented her dish washer in the shed behind her house. How she did it is something you'll have to learn about from the link below, otherwise this discussion will get too long.
The info I provided here comes from wikipedia, I first learned about the lady from a facebook group about American photographs of the 1900's
Thank You Mrs. Cochrane for making the lives of millions of people a little easier...

@ScribbledAdNauseum I guess it's really true that "Necessity is the mother of invention."

@1hopefulman Exactly True!
That woman was tired of washing by hand and I don't blame her.I imagine the soap was much harsher on the hands back then.

I had never heard of her--and though we used to have a dishwasher, I am now the dishwasher!

I hadn't heard of her either. I do the pots and pans by hand, but other dishes get the dishwasher treatment. I used to have to wash them all by hand.
