Does that name sound familiar to you? It should be a household name. Why? Well, because we have reason to thank her. She, along with mechanic George Butters, invented the first successful dishwasher. Oh, there had been other attempts. Joel Houghton designed a hand cranked dish soaker in 1850. A decade later, L. A. Alexander added a geared device that allowed you to spin a rack of dishes through a tub of water. Neither of those inventions were particularly successful.
