That's a little unorthodox, isn't it?

I was at the mailbox when I heard a car approach, I turned around to look and then went about my business. The car had not quite reached me. I hear "Excuse me ma'am". The driver (A kid) asked me if I could help with a fundraiser for his school. I said I'm sorry, we can't." I thought it was a little unorthodox. Usually people go door to door, this kid seemed to just be driving around and looking for anyone who was outside. (A good time of day since the mail had just ran) I was going back inside when I happened to think "Wait, school hasn't even started yet." Maybe they do things differently now and he's already aware of a fundraiser...I don't know, but I sure am glad that I said no. I didn't feel threatened by him in anyway, but I'm still quite curious as to what this "fundraiser" was all about. It still strikes me odd, since, as I said, school hasn't even started yet. Anything weird going on in your neck of the woods?

There are street children here who would go up the jeep and distribute envelope to the commuters.

@florelway It is. Children should be cherished, but I've heard about other things that some people in China do.

@ScribbledAdNauseum if plans go through I will be traveling to China next month. I will have an actual observation on how children and people do.

Yes, kind of odd. Normally, people here will knock on your door and ask for that.

THat's usually the normal here. I guess he didn't want to go knocking door to door.

Could be for sports. Season that will start once school is in session. But yeah, wasting gas versus going door to door?

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes, it would be more reasonably and *thoughtful* to go door to door if he's really raising money for a school fundraiser. But, driving around wasting gas and trying to ask anyone he sees like that does not seem reasonably at all.

I mean, it could be for sports. It could anything, but either way... I think it might have been better to go door to door.I mean, I can understand driving to each street, but park and go door to door... Oh well, if it's legit, I hope he gets help. However, you would sort of think that most people would use social media now.

@infatuatedbby No, it doesn't, does it? The more I think about it, the more confused I get. I mean, one person said he could be fundraising for sports which start nearly as soon as school does. However, his mom and dad probably pay for the gas in the car, it looked like it could have been their car. It was a nicer car.

It might be legitimate that he's fundraising but I would have said no too.

As another person said, who has their wallet with them at the mailbox? I happened to think that it's likely the private schools are already in session, and he could have comef rom one of them. The car was nice enough.

@Marilynda1225 Ah, but then I remembered that he said the name of a public school. Either way, he is not my concern any longer.

@ScribbledAdNauseum you are probably right about the private schools being in session and him being legitimately fundraising.

All Latinos always think badly because we suffer from many insecurities in the most common neighborhoods, for example, in my neighborhood, a modus operandis of robberies is asking you the time for you to take out your cell phone, and if your cell phone is high gamma, when you naively take out your cell phone, they immediately cannon you down and tell you to give it to your cell phone, because it is a robbery, this as an example so that they are not naive and pay attention to their instincts when something is not right at all. Coo says the saying: Think badly, and you'll be right!

It's sad that you have to distrust your neighbors like that. It's just a matter of survival though, and you can never be too careful.

High school students (which he would have to be if he was driving) don't usually participate in fundraisers. It's usually elementary schools that do that kind of stuff. So I would be suspicious especially since, as you said, school hasn't even started yet.

Nah, I'm pretty sure we sold candy in High School, but I could be wrong. I think the clubs do fundraising if nothing else. Of course, it's been 14 years since I was in school, things change... Either way, it was very odd that he was asking about that and school hasn't even started yet.

Gee, that's kinda lazy of him to just drive around and catch people through his window. And you'd think not many people walking around outside would have their wallets/checkbook on them. It's rather early for fundraisers, I would think, since school is just barely starting for most August school goers. Here they encourage online orders with friends and family rather than doing the door to door thing anymore. But I don't know about for older kids.

I'm guessing it would be the same for older kids. I do know that any fundraisers that the kids in my family have had to do was done online. They still got a physical catalog but all the ordering was done online I think, or could be. Yes, I though it was rather lazy. School doesn't start in my county until Augsut 26th, so it made me wonder. I mean, I guess he could be going to one of the local area private schools. The car was nice enough...
