This is a view looking across the Vale of Purbeck from the chalk ridge towards the limestone hills that overlook the sea on the far side. The house in the foreground is the National Trust property where my wife and I stayed for our week "away from it all" - we were actually in the small cottage behind the farmhouse. This was called the "Cheese House", presumably because it was used for making and storing cheese in past times.

If it weren't for the sea in the background, I'd say that you can find such a landscape in many parts of Germany.

This area is not far from where I was brought up and went to school. The farmhouse where we stayed is actually just down the road from where we held our school study camps for O- and A-level geography. It was an excellent area for study because it encapsulates the whole geology of southern England with its bands of (roughly) chalk, clay and limestone - all three zones are covered in this photo. The coast of the peninsula is part of the world-famous Jurassic Coast.

@indexer I live in the south of Germany north of the Swabian Alb which is full of fossils. There is a museum nearby with findings from the Primeval Jurassic Sea which existed in this area. Visitors can bring a hammer and hammer away in a large hole in the ground near the museum. They can take home everything they find there. People digging in their gardens can find ammonites if they're lucky. We've also found some.

What an idyllic area in which to spend a week. And so very 'English'.
