My local college radio station plays a feature called Star Date, which I love. And I listened to an interesting segment on there about the Dog Days of summer.
Are you familiar with this expression?
To me it always seemed to mean the wrapping up of summer.
Apparently it's titled this way because of the star that is prominent at this time.
Here's the segment :
Depending on your viewpoint, the Dog Days of summer are either in full swing or they’re just wrapping up. That’s because there’s no formal definition for the dates of the Dog Days. All we can say for sure is that this period got its name from the brightest

@FayeHazel I've lived long enough to know most of the old phrases. It's the new ones that give me a problem. lol

@FayeHazel I don't think so although perhaps they're upside down.
I think it is still called the 'dog star' just that I'd forgotten about it. We always used to call Orion's Belt the 'saucepan. The sword was the handle of the pot.

@JudyEv Oh wait, yeah those are same as here. And here I thought you had all different stars lol. I like Orion's belt, mostly because it and the dipper are the only constellations I can find consistently. I will greatly enjoy seeing the saucepan now :-)
