We are well into this 50-song music marathon of 50 songs (Yes! 50!) with "of" in the title. The order "of" rank is irrelevant, I'm doing them as I'm feeling them. This one has been in my head for a couple days, so here it is. We are at #33: "The Look of Love" by ABC.
Talk about coming out of nowhere! ABC's 1982 debut album, The Lexicon of Love, entered the UK album chart at #1. And while "The Look of Love" was not that record's first single (it was the third,) it was an international smash hit, charting in 12 countries, reaching Top 20 status in 11 of those (including #1 in Canada.)
The album was produced by 80's uber-producer Trevor Horn, and fueled by vocalist Martin Fry's clever, cynically miserable lyrics set to insanely catchy pop music, a brilliant, 80's masterpiece. Perhaps only the late Peter Steele could match Fry's bleak romantic outlook, but while Steele's band, Type O Negative, was dark, moody, gloomy, etc., you could dance your ass off to ABC.
And "The Look of Love" isn't even nearly as cynical as other songs from the album, such as "Poison Arrow" or "Valentine's Day," but it's there nonetheless. From lyrics such as "When your reason for living is your reason for leaving," or "When your girl has thrown you out on the pavement," to the sigh of despair Fry gives at one point, this is one miserable gent! (In a stroke of genius, the real-life girl that broke Martin Fry's heart is actually the female voice heard uttering the word "Goodbye" in the tune. Way to twist that knife in even deeper, Mr. Horn!)
Recorded in the early 80's. Still sounds great today!

Exactly. That's the thing with the stuff that Trevor Horn produced. It still holds up really well.

@Tampa_girl7 - Me too. I'm always shocked when I can't find something I'm looking for on there.

Was that the Flying Nun I saw in that video? Nice song with that 80's Thompson Twins vibe. I knew that title sounded familiar. Dusty Springfield had a song by the same name in 1967.
